What will the apprentice be doing?
At Air Products our aim is 'Total Safety' which is the ongoing integration of safety into all activities we undertake with the aim of attaining industry leadership in safety performance. In Customer Engineering, we are committed to create an environment where work is completed with safety at the forefront of everything we do.
While training at CATCH, using your company issued tablet, you will also complete Air Products online learning modules on our Learnex platform. You will be shown how to use Learnex and other systems including Human Resources, Health, Wellbeing and Safety and Digital Technology and your tablet will be a company communication tool using emails and video conferencing apps. Work reports are also completed by technicians on their tablets. Having an ability to understand and use Microsoft Windows and iOS-based applications and hardware is desirable here.
Once your preliminary 11 months of training are completed at CATCH, you will then be introduced to the wider Air Products Customer Engineering team.
Initially spending time in our workshop facilities, you will learn about the preparation, maintenance, and operation of cryogenic storage tanks. You will assemble component parts on to these tanks and gain an understanding for safety relief devices, isolation valves, regulators, vaporisers, pressure gauges, differential pressure gauges, level and pressure sensors, and the different pipework and fittings that connect these components together. You will be faced with equipment that doesn’t function correctly so refurbishment work will be undertaken after you have identified where components have failed and need to be replaced. Being able to follow instructions, problem solve, think logically, and recognise process steps to then understand how components work together on a system would be beneficial here. An eye for detail and ability and interest for assembling mechanical components using hand tools would also be good attributes for candidates to own.
You will perform test and inspection procedures, complete bench work using hand tools and your tasks will include pipe bending, oxy-fuel brazing and possibly some welding and metal fabrication. As your served time progresses you will start to gain an appreciation of the craft skills required for the work you will eventually be completing alongside existing installation and maintenance technicians at Air Products customer locations where our industrial gases supply equipment is installed.
After your introduction to the tank preparation workshops, you will accompany technicians at our customer sites. Your understanding will develop of how equipment prepared in the workshop operates in a live situation to serve our customers processes. As your abilities grow, you will then be supervised by the technician you are working with to complete assigned work tasks. Your experience constantly building and your craft skills developing, learning while observing others and the ability to listen, ask questions and remember, retain the information you are witnessing will be key at this stage.
As your time progresses in the team you will have the opportunity to see first-hand how every day we work with safety, simplicity, speed and self-confidence to serve the needs and solve the problems of our customers.
About You
No prior experience is required. You must have a strong sense for safety, bring commitment, passion, attention to detail, and a desire to learn. Maturity and ownership of your own learning and development is required.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
The apprenticeship follows a 3-year programme, with the first year spent off the job at CATCH in Stallingborough. The remainder of the apprenticeship is completed onsite at Air Products.
Accommodation paid; travel home for weekends and holidays will be covered for Year 1 only. Year 1 training is based on site at CATCH in Stallingborough (Accommodation with be based in Hull and transport across to CATCH provided).
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Successful completion of the apprenticeship could lead to a higher-level apprenticeship or full-time employment for the right candidate.
You will have developed a variety of interchangeable skills and have an in depth understanding of our customer stations, our customer processes and our installation and maintenance procedures and methods.
We also have multi skilled Customer Engineering Maintenance Technicians who have additional to their mechanical abilities, specialist competence to work on industrial electrical applications installations. These technicians typically have external vocational electrical qualifications and have gained time served electrical experience in an appropriate industrial setting prior to working with Air Products.
