The Role
The Apprentice Mechanical Plant Engineer will be required to complete the academic and practical training requirements of the electrician apprenticeship, as provided for by the University’s nominated training provider, in order to successfully achieve a Level 3 NVQ Diploma qualification.
You will assist and become competent to carry out day to day inspection, repair, maintenance, and refurbishment of all mechanical building services within the University Estate. This includes but is not limited to water (hot & cold ‘domestic’, chilled, process cooling), heating and cooling systems, air handling, extraction, compressed air and vacuum systems and associated controls.
About You
You will have 4 GSCE’s at grade 5 or above or equivalent. You will be given the opportunity to develop strong organisational skills and build confidence to use your initiative to solve problems and develop improved work methods. You will work well in a team and have good communication skills and the willingness to undertake training for specialist systems and keep qualifications up to date.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, pay will be the lowest spine point of Level 3, which is Spine Point 22, £28,929 full-time equivalent.
In year one of the apprenticeship, pay will be 60 per cent of this lowest spine point value, £17,357.40, before increasing to 70 per cent in year two and to 80 per cent in year three.
- NB - Notwithstanding the provisions set out above, all apprentices will receive a salary which equates to at least the applicable National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for their age, where this exceeds those contractual provisions.
