Job description

This is an exciting new post offering the opportunity to lend your analytical mindset and innovative inspiration to the data science function of our Christie Clinical Outcomes and Data Unit while working towards achieving a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.

We are looking for a curious individual who wants to be part of a team of forward-looking healthcare Analysts, Data Scientists and Statisticians. You must have a commitment to completing a three-year degree apprenticeship and a real interest in exploring for data insights and finding solutions.

You will be a part of the Christie Clinical Outcomes and Data Unit, aiding the team in creating tools and exploring data to guide improvements in clinical outcomes measures and insights. You will work alongside Analysts, Data Scientists and Statisticians and working with clinical colleagues on projects exploring insights and helping to generate prescriptive and predictive analysis to guide improved clinical outcomes.

You will complete your degree coursework and dissertation while working with real data and getting in situ real life experience of real-world data. On completion of your apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to remain as a full time permanent member of the team.

The post is for a permanent band 5 position upon successful completion of an apprenticeship in the first 3 years.

1. Use Microsoft Office software including MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook with minimal supervision
2. Be proactive in learning new software packages (including R and Python) and data systems in order to perform daily and ad hoc tasks as required
3. Liaise with various staff over Teams, via email or face-to-face to discuss work tasks
4. Ensure significant issues affecting the outputs and quality of the department are escalated to the line manager in a timely manner
5. Be an active contributor to team meetings
6. Have a good understanding of summary statistics and basic data visualisations
7. Be proactive in understanding the breadth of the data warehouse, utilising SQL where appropriate
8. Be knowledgeable in data quality issues associated with clinical data and appropriate techniques to use to identify and action on data quality events
9. Generate summary statistics and data visualisations appropriate to the data and clinical aims using statistical software
10. Interpret statistical results and explain them, verbally and in writing, so as to be understood by non-statisticians
11. Create data science tools for projects alongside Data Scientists and Statisticians
12. Integrate data science techniques in Analytics projects utilising Tableau
13. Advise on the correct techniques for data analysis and interpretation, advising analysts when data science and statistical work feasible

During your apprenticeship you will establish strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues as well as your academic counterparts providing opportunities for collaborative working within the clinical outcomes and research environment. You will explore innovative approaches and methodologies for evaluating clinical data and gain confidence in presenting research outputs to the team and to others in the trust. You will be dedicated to your own professional and creative development, taking advantage of learning opportunities available as part of the role.
You will have an appreciation of using data for real world use, be interested in data interrogation, exploration and visualisation and eager to learn new languages and tools such as SQL, Python, R and Tableau to explore data and gain insights from it.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to rise to a challenge, willing to work in a flexible dynamic environment, as well as being self-driven and able to work independently.

You will undertake a BSc Data Science degree with BPP University (course brochure attached) which is fully funded by the trust. The programme duration is 3 years and is completed fully virtually. You will receive 20% off-the-job time allocated for study towards your BSc Data Science qualification.

This is an exciting opportunity to join The Christie’s Clinical Outcomes and Data Unit (CODU) as an Apprentice Junior Data Scientist. The CODUs strategy is to improve patient outcomes through the robust selection, analysis, and visualisation of data. We work closely with colleagues across the trust to support the use of data in clinical and operational decision making. We are experts in data visualisation, creating data analysis tools, and helping colleagues to use these tools in their daily work.

You will be expected to work with the Analysts, Data Scientists and Statisticians within the team, working on projects with stakeholders throughout the Christie, extracting insights from data collected throughout the hospital to be presented back to clinical and operational teams to inform improvements in the hospital.

With your organised, enthusiastic and inquisitive approach you will be able to work to tight deadlines, be a good multitasker and have a mindset for exploring data, responding to the requirements of stakeholders, ensuring the work is completed to agreed timescales and Trust requirements.

You will interpret information from many systems throughout the Trust, being one of the team’s data experts, providing advice on the best approaches for data projects and explaining analysis performed to non-data experts in an approachable and easy to understand way.

You will receive 20% off-the-job time allocated for study towards your BSc Data Science qualification. Independent study time, attendance to lectures and seminars, and completion of written assignments etc. are to be done during this time.

Duties and responsibilities in italics will be developed during the apprenticeship period
