About the Role
Lancashire County Council is pleased to offer Apprentice Highways Operative opportunities. These 24-month training opportunities are based in various locations across Lancashire within the Highways Service. As a Lancashire County Council apprentice, you will be fully supported with specialist training, internal work rotation and a full mentor support system to ensure you get the best out of the apprenticeship.
Key Accountabilities
As an Apprentice Highways Operative, you can expect to get involved in a variety of duties such as general highway maintenance operations and scheme delivery. This can include laying of kerbs, reinstatement of footways and carriageways, installation of street furniture, installation of drainage, patching or pothole repairs using hand operated powered tools and traffic management equipment.
Skills and Experience
Applicants should have a good school, college, or work record in terms of time keeping, conduct and punctuality and a positive attitude towards training.
Candidates should also have an interest in working in the civil engineering/highways industry.

Training
Apprentice Highway Operatives will work towards a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Operative apprenticeship with SB Skills Ltd based at Skelmersdale in blocks of 4 days each month over 18 months. This course will start in August 2023 and you will be expected to show a commitment to learning during your apprenticeship training.

Location
Apprentice Highway Operatives will be placed on a rotation programme during the apprenticeship which will ensure a comprehensive experience of all aspects of highway service delivery. This will include working at several locations across Lancashire from one of bases listed below, please state your location preference in your application form.

Recruitment and Interview
Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to a 1-day recruitment event. This event is from 8:30 to 4pm and will be held at the SB Skills training facility at 38 Gorsey Place , Skelmersdale WN8 9UP. This will be an opportunity to experience real highway works, to understand teamwork and problem solving through a number of task based and classroom activities. Interviews will be held in the afternoon.
