Job description
The Bedford Estates has owned, developed and managed much of Bloomsbury, at the heart of Central London, since 1669. As a long- term landowner we care deeply about Bloomsbury and its community of residents, workers and students. We are dedicated to protecting the heritage of this historic part of London for future generations. Our history is important to us but we are not constrained by it: our modern approach to stewardship includes employing the latest technology in developing and maintaining our buildings, encouraging sustainability and biodiversity, as well as supporting new communities to join and contribute to Bloomsbury’s rich cultural, academic and commercial mix. The Bedford Estate in London covers some 30 acres, including five garden squares – one of which, Bedford Square, is a prime example of Georgian architecture. The property portfolio includes c200 properties, including 825,000sq ft of offices, 100,000sq ft retail space, 1,000 hotel bedrooms and c550 residential homes. The Apprentice Gardener will have the opportunity to take part in work exchanges to other parts of the business to experience varied aspects of horticulture: These could include working at the Humphrey Repton landscape of Woburn Abbey, Woburn Safari Park or the Woburn Golf Club amenity areas. While on these exchanges, the Apprentice Gardener will be able to stay in self-contained private accommodation. Many aspects of horticulture will be covered in daily working life on the London Estate with a particular emphasis on caring for historic garden squares and the enhancement of the local area through considered garden improvement and sympathetic maintenance of areas such as herbaceous borders, lawns and mature trees. The Apprentice Gardener will be under the direction and instruction of the Head Gardener and will be periodically assessed by an outside invigilator appointed by Capel Manor College to ensure that on the job learning is supported by theoretical study. Due to the nature of the role, applicants must hold a full valid UK driving licence.
