About Us
We are a firm of accountants and tax advisors operating from our office in the centre of Exeter. We have been advising clients since 1955. We are proud to have worked with local business, families and individuals throughout our 65 years.
This past year has seen significant changes to our working practices as with all businesses, a lot of our work is currently now conducted remotely.
Although our team has grown in recent years, client care remains core to the services we deliver. As a firm we have tried to ensure that we continually work with our teams to ensure the best outcomes for team members and clients alike. We believe in a strong team culture.
Our accounts teams ensure the clients’ needs are met in relation to their accounts and tax returns. These range from sole traders to medium sized group accounts & include both income tax as well as corporation tax. With a large array of clients ranging from high net worth individuals to medium sized companies, there is a good variety of work and challenges to deal with.

The varied nature of our clients will mean that you will be constantly challenged and continually gaining valuable experience.
You will join our team which has a broad client base, both of which have a focus on owner-managed businesses, many of which have been family owned for numerous generations. As a result of this focus, the vast majority of time is spent assisting these clients with their various compliance tasks such as VAT returns, accounts, tax returns, etc. There will be times when travel to clients is required.
The Job Description
- Preparation of unincorporated & company accounts
- Prepare analysis of accounts
- Monthly closings and preparation of monthly financial statements
- Reconcile and maintain balance sheet accounts
- Draw up financial reports
- Assist with year-end closings
- Prepare tax computations and returns
- Assist in preparing budgets and forecasts
- Review and process expense reports.
- Most importantly help look after our clients needs
Training
You will undertake the “Assistant Accountant” Apprenticeship (an Advanced Apprenticeship in Accounting), with full support from Accountancy Learning as part of their Apprenticeship Programme.
Assessment will be by an “End Point Assessment” and will be graded “Pass” or “Distinction”. This will include two elements:
- A Professional Discussion. This will include a series of questions allowing you to to display the knowledge and experience you have obtained over your apprenticeship. You will build a Portfolio of reflections and product evidence that will be used for discussion points in the PD.
- A Synoptic Exam. This will include elements you have learnt throughout your studies of the individual AAT Units and this will contribute towards your end grade.
You will be prepared for both of these elements by undertaking studies for the AAT (Level 3) Advanced Diploma in Accounting. These will underpin both elements of your “end point assessment”. As such, it is anticipated that your apprenticeship duration will be for 15-18 months although earlier completion is possible, provided the duration exceeds one year and a week.Those with no prior accounting knowledge may need to also complete the Bookkeeping units of AAT Level 2.
You will receive support from both the employer, and the training provider, to complete and achieve your Apprenticeship and will be given time to study during the week on a day release basis. As you are working towards a professional qualification, it is also expected that you will continue your studies outside of normal office hours.
As you learn more in both the office and in your studies your responsibilities, and the variety of tasks you undertake, are expected to increase.
Those with previous relevant qualification and experience may be considered for a Higher Apprenticeship undertaking the Professional Accountant Standard.
About You
You will have a strong academic history, this will be demonstrated by having at least 100 UCAS points at A-Level (or equivalent).
The ability to be to self-motivated towards your studies is important and is demonstrated by your research into the accountancy profession.
You will enjoy the challenge of working with a large variety of clients and the varied types of work those clients bring. You will be someone who wants to make a difference to the firm’s clients and to be part of the team.
