Applications Programmer III (Hybrid/Remote)

  • No Visa Sponsorship is available for this position.

About the College, School, or Department

CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

The Department of Computational Biology (CB) consists of seven full-time faculty members with expertise in computer science, genomics, systems biology, population genetics, and modeling. They apply these skills to a wide range of exciting problems in the life sciences. The department administers the Computational Biology undergraduate concentration within the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Additionally, the faculty in the department are members of the Computational Biology graduate field, as well as several other graduate fields offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department of Computational Biology is a multi-college unit, which is led by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Individual faculty lines come from several colleges to form Computational Biology. Computing and Information Science and the College of Arts & Sciences currently have faculty lines in CB.

The Wei Lab develops more accurate and scalable computational methods that utilize large genomic datasets to gain new insights into fundamental evolutionary processes. Recent work in the lab focuses on understanding demographic history, natural selection, complex traits evolution, genetic interactions, and recombination.

The Opportunity

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

As a programmer proficient in C++, primary job responsibilities in the Wei Lab will involve designing, coding, testing, debugging, documenting, and maintaining programs or software applications using this programming language. Develop enhancements that enable a positive end-user experience. Contribute to formulating and defining system scope and objectives to develop new software or systems of moderate complexity for cutting-edge research projects; these new applications should bridge the fields of population genetics and statistical genetics.

Develop or modify software systems based on detailed specifications. Plan and execute projects with straightforward interdependency with other systems and/or projects. Throughout the production life cycle, conduct research, design software, document specifications, and make necessary modifications. Participate in code reviews to evaluate code quality and validate test routines and schedules to ensure that test cases mimic external interfaces and address all browsers and device types. Troubleshoot software issues.

Analyze and resolve software errors; provide status reports where required. Contribute to creating technical documentation and user manuals, updating, and modifying existing code. Engage with users for needs analysis and provide resolution in a timely fashion. Develop or modify procedures to solve moderately complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and forms of desired results. Create responsive and visually appealing designs that meet user requirements and conform to best practices in web design.

Work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and students in the lab. Collaborate with them to understand project requirements and discuss potential solutions for projects with straightforward interdependency with other systems and/or projects, providing technical guidance and support as needed. Communicate progress updates and identify potential issues or roadblocks to the PI and the rest of the team in a timely manner.
