Job description
We are looking to recruit an experienced Animal Keeper to assist in the daily care of our animals at Old Down Estate. We have a selection of animals ranging from chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs to cows, donkeys and sheep. The successful candidate must be hardworking, dedicated and able to work on their own initiative.
Main Responsibilities:
The main purpose of the role is to undertake husbandry activities. Responsibilities could be either general or based on specific experiences or interests. Successful candidate will need to be able to work within a visitor attraction and will be required to interact with the public. This is directed day to day by the Animal Manager or other key staff within the Estate. This is a very manual outdoor role and the team work in all weathers.
The Animal Team, which you will be part of, is responsible for:
· Welfare of a variety of animals housed at Old Down Country Estate.
· Providing diet preparation for each animal group.
· Responsible for assessing, storing and stocktaking of animal feeds and materials.
· Maintaining animal health and applying treatment where necessary.
· Maintaining a systematic daily routine - cleaning and feeding schedule for animals.
· Maintain animal enclosures, fences, houses and water systems.
· Monitoring animals accordingly regarding their health and interaction with the public.
· Develop improvements to facilities and additions to the animal section at Old Down Country Estate.
· To be involved in animal presentation and interacting with the public, birthday parties and school parties.
· Assist in developing an agreed breeding schedule to increase stock where required.
Experience/qualifications: a minimum Level 3 in Animal Care is required or comparable experience.
Working hours are 40-45 per week dependent on time of year and will include weekends on rotation.
