As a Logistics operative, you will be part of the team's mission to use sustainable and creative methods in achieving everyday tasks to work smarter and not harder.
Reporting into the Logistics Manager, you will be instrumental in supporting the team with their departmental goals and objectives and completing everyday tasks in various areas such as the post room, animal food stores, warehouses and transport.
- The post holder will work within the Logistics Team at London Zoo and carryout all duties in line with relevant policies and procedures.
- You will be required to prepare food for the animals which involves handling meat, frozen rodents, fruit, and vegetables and overseeing animal diets with the nutritionist.
- You will be required to support the team in overseeing logistical storage solutions onsite that are shared with other stakeholders.
- You will be required to be able to drive and appropriately use a variety of vehicles and plant e.g., forklift trucks, vans, trucks, and cars
- The post holder will be required to undertake duties relating to a mail room, involving sending and receiving mail, parcels and interacting with couriers and staff.
- To assist with animal moves/collections both internally around site and externally to other Zoo’s.
- To place orders with approved suppliers, this will sometimes involve sourcing an appropriate supplier and consulting with the procurement team.
- To maintain required stock levels and to ensure stock rotation.
- To liaise with the animal and other departments in relation to animal produce requirements and deliveries, including frozen whole chickens, ducks, rabbits, mice, rats, quails, chicks etc.
- The post holder will be required to deliver and collect other items (including some heavy objects) from internal and external locations using appropriate manual handling techniques.
- To prepare food produce for delivery to sections, this will include the accurate preparation of meat, flesh and joints into required sizes and weights.
- The post holder needs to conduct some routine health & safety inspections and record their findings.
- The post holder will be required to conduct cleaning of all areas within their area of work including the office, general stores, animal food stores, post room, meat fridge & freezers and vehicles.
- To ensure that ZSL’s tools and equipment are kept in good order and report any faulty tools or equipment to their line managers.
- To assist, guide or oversee occasional non-ZSL personnel whilst on site - these may include contractors, inspectors or any other personnel as discussed with the Logistics Manager.
- The post holder is expected to send emails to appropriate internal and external contacts and amend or create other documents within Microsoft Office.
- The post holder will also need to perform additional duties as required, e.g., assisting the Grounds team with snow clearing and assisting with the setup of events or functions.

- Able to vary their working day e.g., start at 6am
Please note: Working hours vary depending on the logistics section, and can include a 6am, 8am or 9am start and are based on a 37.5 hours working week, Monday to Friday. Candidates that do apply must be aware that the position will be physically demanding and will require flexibility and the ability to work in a variety of conditions both indoors and outdoors. Due to the nature of the position candidates must also possess a full, clean UK driving license.
