Are you looking for your next animal care role?
We have an exciting opportunity available at the largest animal welfare charity in the UK as an Animal Care Assistant. Every year the RSPCA takes in and cares for thousands of animals, from pets to wildlife and everything in between!
Our Birmingham site is a purpose built animal welfare centre that has the capacity to house 160 cats and 60 dogs, plus a unit that houses rabbits and other small animals. We provide the best care for those animals that have been abused, rescued from harm and need specialist treatment. We also aim to find life-long new homes for animals at the centre.
As an Animal Care Assistant you will be providing care for all animals in the Centre whilst establishing positive and professional relationships with members of the public and your colleagues.
We are looking for a confident and friendly individual with a genuine interest in animal welfare and experience working in the animal care/welfare industry.
You'll have the skills to maintain computerised administrative records and the ability to adhere to important health and safety protocols at all times.
The work can be tough, both physically and emotionally, so you'll need to be compassionate and resilient. However, the work is extremely rewarding, and you'll be working with a friendly and dedicated team who we are extremely proud of.
What you'll be doing
- Cleaning animal accommodation for all domestic species and wildlife to the required standard set by the RSPCA.
- Preparing and providing food and water for all animals in the establishment.
- Performing regular health checks on all animals and giving medical treatments as prescribed by the centre's consulting Veterinary Surgeon.
- Implementation of behavioural modification programs for all species.
- Attending to the needs of the individual animals including providing exercise/socialisation and grooming for all animals within the care of the centre.
- Communicating with supporters/adopters, staff and volunteers both face to face, by phone and email.
- Completing all relevant animal paperwork and updating the centre's computer data base for all animals held on site.
You'll have...
- Good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel.
- Voluntary or paid experience working with animals.
- Good animal handling skills.
- Animal Care qualifications (desirable).
- Willingness and ability to work shifts between our operating hours of 08.00 - 16.00, including weekends.
- Whilst having a driving license is not essential, please note our animal centre is located in a rural area with limited public transport.
What's in it for you
It's an exciting time to join us in the decade of our bicentenary as we focus on our Strategy to 2030. The RSPCA works 365 days a year, rescuing all animals of all types from abuse, neglect, and injury.
We value and recognise our employees' contribution and are proud to offer an extensive benefits package that includes:
- Great annual leave benefits - 25 days annual leave on entry rising after 5 years
- Additional society day around Christmas
