Job description
Description
Who we are
We help our clients design and deliver digital, technology and organisational transformation - solving real problems for real people. We research, design and build things: better services and products, better ways of working, better user experiences and better organisations and culture. Our core areas of expertise are analysis, research, analytics, data; user-centred design (service design, content design, interaction design and user research); product management and delivery; business change and people development.
We primarily work in the public sector, supporting initiatives that improve society and the lives of citizens; with not-for-profit organisations, charities and social enterprises; and with some private-sector companies. The key sectors we're working in at the moment include education, apprenticeships & skills development, social care, rehabilitation, housing and criminal justice - but we're always growing, developing and finding out about new things.
The role
This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference on a range of exciting government projects, and shape – or lead - the growing analytics community within Farsight Consulting.
We are looking for an experienced and adaptive analytics professional who can combine their leadership experience with technical expertise to enable and inspire our clients to take data-driven decisions.
At Farsight Consulting we promote multidisciplinary, ‘T shaped’ skillsets in our people and provide coaching and upskilling through a dedicated coaching model and skills academy. We anticipate that a successful candidate would spend around 40% of their time delivering coaching and training activities – both ‘on the job’ and more classroom based.
Applicants interested in a part time (3-4 days/week) role are strongly encouraged to apply for this role, but we will equally consider full-time applicants. We are very likely to be able to make provision for a part time applicant, possibly as part of a job share-style arrangement.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver excellent specialist analytics services for clients. This would typically be as one member of a multi-disciplinary client team, consisting of a combination of other Farsight people, other consultants/contractors and clients’ own employees. The exact role you would play within the team would depend on your own technical skills and experience, but might include:_Analytics engineering
Data engineering
Leadership and/or management of a data/analytics team/product
Government digital ‘performance analysis’ - responsible for definition, analysis and visualisation of a digital service’s KPIs and goals
_
- Influence and inspire clients to take informed strategic decisions about their approach to analytics – advising on tools, outcomes, governance, people, skills etc., working with others to complement and fill in the gaps in your own knowledge and experience
- Be a ‘performance coach’ to a number of Farsight analytics specialists – supporting them as they work out how to achieve their goals, celebrating their success, and managing their performance as required
- Deliver training activities – these could include:_On the job training e.g. through pair programming or mentoring
Classroom based training
Production of resources, methodologies or exercises
_
- Optionally, leading our analytics discipline, responsible for the skills analytics specialists at Farsight bring to their client work, working with our Heads of Advisory Services and Service Delivery. We would discuss your level of interest in taking on this additional responsibility as part of the application process and are able to tailor the role to your experience and preferences.
Requirements
We’ll assess the following skills during the application process:
- SQL. You have used more advanced SQL (for example, complex joins between combinations of tables and CTEs, analytic functions, regular expressions, scripting and/or arrays/nested data) in a range of contexts (for example, different data warehouses or databases)
- Data visualisation. You have used a range of tools (e.g. Looker, Looker Studio, Power BI, Tableau, Lightdash) to visualise data, can describe the stories this has enabled you to tell, and can explain your preferences around tooling while retaining flexibility to meet client needs.
- Enabling data driven decision-making. You have a proven track record of breaking down the barriers that prevent a team from doing this effectively. Sometimes you have done this through application of your own technical skills. Sometimes you have delivered this through empowering and influencing others to bring skills and experience that complement your own to bear.
- Building and managing relationships. You can build and maintain strong relationships, demonstrating strong emotional intelligence and recognising the different needs of the diverse range of team members and clients we work with. You have experience mediating and mending relationships and managing expectations of clients and stakeholders.
- Communication. You have strong listening, and verbal and written communication skills, which you can leverage to build relationships and facilitate effectively, asking the right questions to ensure conversations remain focused. You have experience communicating sensitive messages, telling nuanced data stories, and navigating difficult conversations, steering these towards positive outcomes.
- Leadership. You role-model positive and supportive servant leadership behaviours. You know how to adjust your leadership approach to meet the needs of a diverse team and create the right environment to keep team members motivated and empowered. You champion ways-of-working and a positive team culture.
- Adaptability. You can adjust your approach, including technical decisions, leadership approach and role to suit different client contexts and team needs.
- Training and management. You have enabled others to achieve their goals and increase the value that they brought to their colleagues or customers – this might have been in a formal line management or coaching arrangement, or a formal or informal training role.
Nice to have
- Analytics engineering skillset – for example, dbt or Dataform
- Python for analytics – for example, Jupyter notebooks, ETL pipelines
- Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary government digital teams
- Experience in another discipline, e.g. product management, service design, development, delivery management, business analysis
