Job Title: STEM Specialist Service Organization: Salt Lake County - Department of Youth Services Reports to: Afterschool Program Director and AmeriCorps Program Director Salary Range/Benefits: AmeriCorps living stipend plus education award given upon completion of service. Equivalent take-home hourly rate of $17.00/hour and equivalent total compensation rate of $20.00+/hour. Hours: 450-hour service term from mid-September 2023 through May 2024. Approximately 13 hours/week. Must be available 3-4 days a week from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Promise South Salt Lake is an initiative of the City of South Salt Lake which provides dynamic, highly specialized community and out-of-school-time programming with academic and prevention focus at 14 neighborhood centers throughout the city. JOB SUMMARY This is an AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps is a unique service opportunity that is different from standard employment. AmeriCorps members sign an agreement to complete a 450-hour term of service and receive a bi-weekly living stipend in return. Additionally, upon successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps members will receive an education award that can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Living stipends and education awards for each service term length are as follows: 450-hour term of service (~13 hours/week) Living stipend: $7,650.00 Education award: $1,718.25 Total compensation: $9,368.25 KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities): Lead STEM lessons/activities and explain STEM concepts in a fun, relatable manner to youth. Develop and implement weekly informal STEM curriculum that utilizes experiential learning methods. Assist in classrooms by providing support surrounding STEM curriculum for youth. Maintain attendance records and lesson plans in order to track data for the number of students served. Complete weekly timesheets. Assist with daily operational tasks outside of scheduled STEM time. Attend training meetings and any regular staff meetings at the service site. Conduct pre and post-surveys of all youth served within the first and final months of service. Participate in MLK Day of Service and National AmeriCorps Service Week. Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and previously used curricula. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent. Background in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Education, Computer Science, or other related areas. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of effective guidance and discipline for youth and adults. Knowledgeable in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Strong communication skills to effectively connect with a diverse population from different social and ethnic backgrounds. Reliable and punctual. Passion for youth development. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Understanding of group dynamics and Positive Behavior Support techniques. Some college experience or a college degree in STEM related fields. Two years related experience in youth service. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 18 years old. Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must meet the requirements set by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Adaptable and flexible to change. Assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor(s).
