About your team
Solutions & Multi Asset (S&MA) is a global team, managing portfolios using a wide range of asset classes, including equities, fixed income, real estate, infrastructure and other alternatives. The team manage $47bn on behalf of institutional and retail clients across global regions (as of 31 December 2022). Our large team includes Investment Management, Global Macro & Strategic Asset Allocation, Tactical Asset Allocation, Strategy Research, Client Solutions, and Implementation resources, supported by Fidelity’s significant operational infrastructure to deliver investment services to clients. These resources support investment decision-making across a range of portfolio construction disciplines, including tactical asset allocation, strategy selection and risk management.
The Investment Management team is responsible for managing client portfolios and the tactical asset allocation process. The team-based process has a primary focus on delivering high quality outcomes to clients, in a scalable and efficient way. The team manages investment strategies across a range of outcomes, such as Income, Absolute Return, Systematic, and Dynamic Growth. Each of these outcome groups are run by distinct teams of 3-4 people, drawing on the richness and expertise of the IM team but allowing enough discretion for PMs to deliver on the outcomes for consistent with their mandates and guidelines.
Portfolio Managers in S&MA draw on an extensive toolkit for delivering investment objectives, including a large and well-resourced research team (across Tactical Asset Allocation, Manager Research and Quantitative Research), as well as a dedicated Portfolio Analytics, Portfolio Construction and Risk team, and implementation specialists. The team also works with colleagues across Fidelity’s bottom-up investment teams across key asset classes, capturing research from this substantial global research platform.
About your role
The purpose of your role is provide research for your coverage area, contribute to idea generation with additional investment options in alternatives, provide insight and advice on alternative investment strategies to Solutions & Multi Asset’s portfolio managers, and collaborate on Solutions & Multi Asset’s plans to grow the alternatives business.
Your aim is to add value over a medium-term horizon with investment recommendations. This can mean outperforming relevant benchmarks and/or peer group over the cycle, providing good risk-adjusted returns agnostic to benchmarks and displaying low correlations with other asset classes.
Solutions & Multi Asset research primarily serves Solutions & Multi Asset investment decision making so you will work closely on a day-to-day basis with the Multi-Asset portfolio management team, and your recommendations will feed directly into the team’s model portfolios and Solutions & Multi Asset portfolios.
You will be part of a team of alternative analysts who are closely involved in guiding Solutions & Multi Asset’s investment in alternatives, and contribute to the team’s growing impact with in-depth research, constructive challenging of views and ideas, diversity of thought, and new perspectives, building on your existing experience in alternatives investing. You will commit to integrating sustainability analysis into your research and contribute to continued strengthening of our sustainability research process. You will help steer the development of the alternatives research process, ensuring a high quality of research and consistency across the team in the way research is conducted and communicated. You will help develop future talent, coaching grads to help them develop quantitative and qualitative research skills as well as strong meeting/communication skills.
Key to this role, therefore, is a flexible, dynamic approach, high research integrity, and a focus on commercial application of research.
Key responsibilities:
- Researching, recommending and monitoring a broad range of instruments in the alternatives universe
- Providing recommendations, tactical advice and regular research notes to support Fidelity Multi Asset portfolio managers and product range
- Providing fund recommendations to Fidelity Personal Investing to support Fidelity’s Select Lists globally
- Managing, monitoring and updating model portfolios of alternatives managers in line with risk/return specifications, with full responsibility for model performance
- Undertaking bespoke research requests as needed for Portfolio Managers
- Working with Fidelity’s Client Solutions, supporting their engagement with clients and presenting to clients when requested by the Client Solutions team
- Working with operational teams, providing input to the evolution of investment infrastructure
- Providing subject matter expertise and intellectual leadership of the team and actively coaching junior team members
- Ensuring quality of alternatives research team’s output, driving process and philosophy enhancements as appropriate
About you
- Degree or equivalent professional qualifications
- Three to five years’ experience of researching portfolio managers, with a focus on alternatives
- Demonstrated positive contribution to client outcomes
- Experience in the investment management business, working in a sophisticated, performance driven, team-orientated environment
- Demonstrated experience with process-driven research approach
- Some experience with portfolio construction
- Exceptional analytical thinking, and numerical skills
- Ability to understand, analyse and interpret markets, and the different drivers of markets over the cycle
- Experience of trade recommendations across a range of asset classes
- A passion for or experience of ESG led investments
- High level of fluency with a wide range of quantitative/analytical tools
- Strong understanding of quantitative finance and financial economics as they apply to portfolio construction
- Advanced communication skills which will likely include client, the media, internal stakeholders including senior management
