Job description
ALR Operations Engineer
ALR Operations Engineer
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
Permanent
Full time
£39,868 - £43,735
Who are we?
We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) - the UK's centre of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We are a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.
We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community whose focus is on improving the world in which we live. Our work is balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.
We have a rich history dating back to 1949, and our future has never looked more exciting as we aim to be the world’s most innovative oceanographic institution.
About the role
The Autosub Long Range (ALR) Autonomous Underwater Vehicles have seen significant recent success operating:
- Under ice sheets in Antarctica;
- During two research expeditions off the NOC operated research vessel Discovery, incorporating diverse and leading sensor packages;
- Completing a 2000km over the horizon trial (a world’s first for this type of vehicle);
- Completing a pioneering survey of multiple decommissioned oil industry sites with an underwater vehicle launched and recovered from shore.
To support this success into the future we are expanding the operations delivery team. We are looking to recruit a practical engineer with excellent attention to detail, who is willing to undertake most aspects of ALR operations including maintenance, troubleshooting, fieldwork and piloting. This will include basic mechanical and electronic skills, as well as working with Linux computing systems and networked computers.
This is an operational role and the successful candidate will be required on occasion to work away from home during field operations and out of hours whilst piloting (appropriate overtime payments will be provided). It may also require some seagoing time on Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and other ships (sea-time allowance provided).
About you
You will have completed an HNC/HND or degree in a relevant discipline or have related experience in instrumentation or autonomous vehicles.
You will ideally have experience in the use of scientific marine instrumentation with a strong track record of solving engineering problems. Some knowledge or experience in electronics, and/ or software, networked based computing and Windows is required. A knowledge of the Linux operating system and software development experience would be an advantage. A working knowledge of AUVs or gliders would be highly desirable.
You should be interested and willing to broaden and enhance your skills as required to meet the requirements of the team. There will also be opportunities to work with the MARS development teams to enhance the capabilities of the ALR and marine robotic systems more broadly.
As part of this role you will be required to go on fieldwork trips and occasionally at sea. You will be able to plan your own work given broad direction and be able to work effectively as a member of a team ashore and at sea.
