Thales Maritime Mission Systems (MMS) operates is a global leader in research activities and systems development, supplying Navies, Coast Guards and Search & Rescue teams with the most advanced technical capabilities. Our portfolio includes Autonomous Systems, System Integration, Comms and Sonar expertise.

Our MMS team based at Cheadle is expanding due to research and development programmes aimed at enhancing capabilities and exploring new technologies and system. We therefore are actively recruiting for an Algorithm Developer to join our team immediately, and on a permanent basis.

This role would be well-suited to individuals with a PhD or MSc in Science, Maths or Physics and have gained exposure to Linear Algebra, Sonar Systems or Sensors. What does the job involve?

The General Sonar Studies team delivers low TRL and study activities to external and internal customers and are central to the development and procurement of concepts, capabilities and solutions to anticipate and address the most challenging customer requirements.

  • You’ll be joining an agile and dynamic team at the forefront of UK maritime data exploitation and processing.
  • Development of sonar processing algorithms, development of AI solutions, development of data fusion and tracking algorithms, research studies, performance prediction and trials analysis.
  • Collaboration inside and outside the company is central to the approach employed.
  • Enable and contribute to innovation activities in the Maritime Mission Systems business area. Working with a team of highly capable specialists the candidate will support the delivery of better customer decisions across the mission cycle through revolutionary data exploitation and processing techniques.
  • Support the development of compelling, collaborative solutions and associated bid documents for Customer Funded R&D Programmes.
  • support the delivery of tasks, work packages and projects with a focus on delivery to time, budget and quality.

What are we looking for?
The role requires a flexible and proactive approach founded on academic excellence, problem solving, self-discipline, a willingness to learn, leadership, management, teamwork and the ability to create and communicate a vision.

Ideally candidates will have obtained a PhD in a STEM domain, however candidates with an MSc and relevant experience across one of the below requirement can also be considered.

We will be looking for candidate to have a background of innovation in one or more of the following areas:

  • Statistical and stochastic processes and linear algebra.
  • Large Array Processing, Towed Array Processing or High Frequency Array Processing (including Intercept Systems)
  • Adaptive Beamforming
  • Bayesian Systems
  • Artificial Intelligence applied to Sensor Processing
  • Big Data Processing and Data Analytics
  • Bulk Data Processing TechniquesT0
  • Oceanography and Performance Modelling

Additional experience:

  • Matlab or equivalent knowledge would be advantageous
  • Experience of auto-coding from Matlab to C is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience technical report writing, presentation preparation and generation and presentation/communication skills for papers, seminars, conferences etc. is highly desirable.
