Job description for Air Safety Engineer
We are actively looking for diligent and meticulous Air Safety Engineers to join either an Aircraft Platform or an Aircraft Systems Delivery Team. We have multiple Air Safety Engineering positions available across a breadth of locations. Are you experienced in systems safety management? If so, we want to hear from you!
We welcome applications from Safety Engineers from other regulated environments with the willingness to reskill their safety focus in an aviation context.
As an Air Safety Engineer, you will support the development and management of effective safety management systems focusing on fast jets, transport aircraft or helicopters. Your main tasks will be the identification and analysis of hazards, the evaluation of risk reduction measures, and ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed. Aviation safety is paramount and as an Air Safety Engineer, you will play a vital role in the air environment.
You should be process driven and have a keen eye for detail. We are looking for an engineer to influence the safety decisions across the project lifecycle, by ensuring our Armed Forces are equipped with capable, safe-to-operate equipment. Safety is a niche area within our engineering teams, we expect you to arrive prepared to upskill, train and develop into the role.

Please note that due to their secure nature, these posts require full security clearance without caveats and are open to UK nationals (sole or dual) only. If you hold a dual British nationality, your application will still be considered however there may be restrictions on your assignments or work travel. Each applicant will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Please note some attendance to the stated site and business travel in the UK will be required for this position.
Responsibilities for Air Safety Engineer
The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy DE&S corporate standards for acquisition safety management.
- Work with colleagues at all levels to ensure compliance with relevant UK and EU legislation and regulations, Ministry of Defence (MOD) regulations and DE&S policy.
- Support the development and management of effective safety management systems; identifying and analysing hazards and contributing to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed.
- Specify safety-related systems architectures up to the highest safety integrity levels.
- Manage contractual aspects to ensure safety requirements are captured and manages contractors who perform safety activities.
- Provide informed safety advice to decision makers through project safety panels.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- You will hold a minimum of a HNC (i.e., Level 4) qualification in a relevant Engineering subject or will demonstrate the equivalent experience.
- You will hold Professionally Registered status with a relevant Engineering, Professional Safety Institute, or equivalent body; or be able to achieve registered status within 12 months of starting in the post.
- You will have experience in the use of system safety management tools & processes, and have evidence of working within a safety management environment.
- You will have experience of providing technical advice and delivery of safety products or services from within an engineering environment
