The Livestock Team are close-knit, with a great combined knowledge of farming, livestock production and value chains, we’re driven to make a difference to our customers, farmers, and the environment – and we like to have fun while doing it! We want to work with our farmers, suppliers and category teams to provide great quality, taste, freshness and distinctiveness. This team is responsible for the eggs that top our toast in the morning to the roast dinners we serve to our loved ones – from bacon to beef and from the chicken to the egg!

As Agriculture Manager, you’ll work collaboratively across the business and our value chains to implement the Sainsbury’s Agriculture Livestock strategy for your aligned species. To achieve this, you’ll engage with and deliver insight to, the Sainsbury’s technical and commercial teams, our supply base, farmer development groups and external experts to align with our plan for better sustainability commitments and our Win in Food strategy.

This level of cross-functional, and external engagement means that we’re looking for a great communicator, who can utilise their existing knowledge and experience across the end-to-end value chains, to implement the sourcing strategy for your aligned species by influencing and delivering data led insight.

As an Agriculture Manager you’ll:

  • Deliver the Sainsbury’s Livestock sourcing strategy for your aligned species, including the delivery of our publicly stated commitments and in line with our business values
  • Input of livestock and agriculture expertise, advice and recommendation to Sainsbury’s strategic business change projects including Value Chain Analysis and Sustainability Planning, Category and Supplier Business plans and supply base reviews. Working in partnership with the category teams and supply base to deliver the Sainsbury’s Category plans
  • Support senior agriculture managers and Head of Livestock to deliver cross sector projects and initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for change and in your supply chain(s) and implement as required e.g. farmer selection, this could be strategic development of the existing supply base or establishing a different structure of new producers
  • Prioritise your workload in line with business goals ensuring delivery of key goals both operationally and from a KPI and ‘Our sustainability plan’ perspective
  • Act as an ambassador for the Sainsbury’s Brand at the relevant industry forums and engage key stakeholders (as agreed with the Livestock Manager) ensuring we are at the forefront of industry knowledge and are effectively communicating our position and achievements to the appropriate audience
  • Be aware of collaborative R&D opportunities that are aligned to our priorities of continuous improvement in livestock sourcing (including health and welfare), livestock performance or product quality, and recommend projects to the Livestock Manager for consideration

Our Agriculture team would love to see:

  • Degree/equivalent in Agriculture or related subject (e.g. Animal science) or significant experience in the agricultural industry
  • Sector experience preferable with demonstrable experience in livestock and a track record of delivering results
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commercial awareness, sound analytical thinking and judgment
  • Experience of working in a cross-functional team to deliver business-wide projects
  • Ability to represent the business to high-level external stakeholders
  • Full understanding of supply chain (field-to-fork)
