The Students Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) is here to represent and have a positive impact on our students’ journeys while here at BU. We are a charity for students run by students, we provide support through our different departments to help our students further develop their skills and qualities, giving them the tools to navigate higher education and future endeavours once the leave university.
SUBU Advice is a free, independent, non-judgemental and confidential advice service for all students at Bournemouth University. We provide support for our students on a range of issues ranging from academic to housing. We are here to ensure our students have a support system whilst at university that they can turn to if faced with any concerns or queries.
We are a small team that works closely together to run the service efficiently, we work by appointment, meeting with students in a safe and confidential environment. We also run drop in hours for same day appointments if students feel they need urgent support, making ourselves accessible to all individual student’s needs.
We are currently recruiting for a SUBU Advice Advisor. This role involves providing advice, guidance, and representation to Bournemouth University Students on a range of issues including wellbeing, housing, finance, academic and many others.
This role requires excellent communication and relationship building skills, liaising with students and staff internally and externally on a daily basis. A calm and empathic approach is also required due to the often-fast paced nature of taking on enquiries in the Advice Department and as we are often approached by students in a state of distress.
Key Tasks
- Advice and Guidance Duties: directly helping clients as a key objective, providing accurate advice, support and signposting or referrals as appropriate. Supporting students to prepare for and attend various BU panels.
- Support /Mentoring Duties: Work as part of a team, support other team members when they require case support to ensure the best outcomes for the students.
- Administration Duties: email & diary management.
- Communication Duties: between clients, team, SUBU staff and Officers, University staff, other external contacts and use of social media.
- Organisational Duties: organising client meetings, prompting staff and students for input into various matters, supporting the day-to-day operational function of the department.
- Data Duties: maintain and manage various client record and information systems.
- Compliance Duties: Supporting the delivery of operational plans, policy, and departmental objectives, ensuring that services operate within their legislative responsibilities. Maintain confidentiality in line with the SUBU Advice policy, and principals of the Advice Quality Standard framework.
- Reviewing & Evaluation Duties: participate in SUBU strategic planning and development sessions, ensuring all areas of engagement to reflect SUBU.
- Networking Duties: Maintain strong relationships and partnerships with the University, local community wellbeing organisations and organisations such as Advice UK.
- Key Union Events Duties: when asked to assist with the organisation and administration of the larger Union events such as Freshers, Summer Ball, Open Days.

Reporting to: Advice Manger
Hours of work: Fixed term 12 months, 37 hours (Mon – Fri 8 - 4pm)
Location: Student Centre, Talbot Campus, with some time at Lansdowne Campus
