An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Histopathology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT. We are looking to recruit an Advanced Biomedical Scientist to lead our diagnostic cytopathology section. We are a large department with many specialist areas currently based on three sites (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Northern General Hospital and the Chesterfield Royal Hospital), processing 80,000 histology requests per year. We offer excellent training in all aspects of Cellular Pathology techniques.
You should be able to demonstrate relevant experience in sample preparation, staining and quality control assessment for a range of diagnostic cytopathology samples, and hold a specific interest in this area. You will be responsible for the day to day running of this section in conjunction with Laboratory Management.
The post will mainly be based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Applications are invited from well-motivated individuals holding registration with the HCPC, the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or equivalent and an MSc level qualification (or demonstrate equivalent experience).
The service is represented by sub- specialist expert Consultant Histopathologists, a team of capable Biomedical Scientists, skilled non-registered healthcare professionals and a competent team of admin and clerical staff.
CPD is supported. We are committed to exploring new and improved training methods. Staff are encouraged to engage in further study.
The post holder will undertake the role of supervisor for the cytopathology section, and in conjunction with Laboratory Management, be responsible for all aspects of sample preparation and staining of diagnostic cytopathology samples received.
Assume responsibility for the resolution of laboratory processing and equipment failures in the cytopathology section.
Ensure that laboratory process and quality records are completed in line with standard operating procedures.
In conjunction with Laboratory Management, develop and maintain the laboratory testing repertoire for cytopathology samples.
Ensure frozen sections for DIF staining are produced in a timely manner and maintain the stock of suitable control material.

The Transformation Programme may include the consolidation of some services. Staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
Participation in the laboratory Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm working arrangements, weekend and bank holiday rotas when rolled out is expected of all staff.
