Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Job Summary: Under limited supervision, performs basic professional accounting assignments requiring knowledge of accounting theory and principles.
Additional Department Summary: The Accounting Specialist provides professional support for accounting and business operations of University Recreation programs (Sport Clubs, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Recreation, and Aquatics). Processes approved reimbursements for Sport Clubs. Generates invoices and data reports. Maintains budget records for clubs and programs. Coordinates club travel. Manages programmatic purchases and settlements. Serves as a primary purchasing card holder and processes purchase requisitions to provide support for regular and large-scale departmental purchases as needed. Reconciles additional Purchasing Cards for assigned program areas.
Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of bookkeeping or accounting experience; OR Associate's degree and two (2) years bookkeeping or accounting experience; OR Bachelor’s degree with some bookkeeping or accounting experience. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Knowledge of finance and accounting principles. Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to use basic office software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to identify and resolve problems effectively and independently. Knowledge of and ability to use financial and accounting applications specific to the University of Alabama.

Preferred Qualifications: Associate's degree or higher and two (2) years progressive accounting experience. Knowledge and experience with University systems such as Everest, Banner and Concur. Experience working within a higher education (university or college) environment. Some knowledge of University financial accounting, purchasing, and travel policies and procedures. Experience working with online financial accounting management systems.
