Job Description
The Staff Accountant will support post-award financial functions of the Sponsored Research Finance Office. Specific duties and responsibilities may fluctuate based upon actual assignments and needs of the teams. The staff accountant position is entry level becoming with general accepted accounting principles knowledge while building fund/grant accounting experience. The Staff Accountant will be cross-trained on the specific duties and responsibilities listed below.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform reclassifications of expenditures to grants and ensures expenditures are allowable, allocable, reasonable and consistently treated.
- Create journal entries to allocate residuals/overdrafts and/or overhead discrepancies to departmental accounts, as a result of reconciliations/closeouts.
- Assist Research Accountants with grant closeout functions required by sponsors including reconciliations with financial status reports or final invoices, trailing transactions, purchase and order liquidations; review general ledger transactions to ensure accuracy and complete journal entries.
- Respond to inquiries or requests for assistance as they relate to post-award financial management.
- Assist in the preparation of materials related to audit inquiries for internal, sponsor, federal or state audits.
- Identify and apply payments to sponsored awards including checks and ACH/wires.
- Maintain and organize all deposit files and assist with preparation of bank deposit.
- Process sponsor refunds as needed.
- Assist Accounts Receivable team with invoicing and ensures approvals are obtained prior to sending invoice to sponsor.
- Actively participate as a member of the Sponsored Research Finance Office team to help assure the accomplishment of office goals and objectives.
- Perform job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, donors, volunteers, co-workers and others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, required and/or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Minimum of two years of professional experience in accounting or cash handling/processing preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal direction required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet required.
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, complex technical issues in a clear, concise manner, to individuals with little or no technical background required.
- Ability to work accurately with detailed information required.
- Ability to prioritize, organize and assess work in order to meet aggressive deadlines and cope in fast-paced environment required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative, tactful, effective and harmonious working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, Lurie and Northwestern administrators and sponsors required.
- Capable of working in a diverse, multi-disciplinary team and interacting with all levels of the organization required.
- Basic understanding of sponsored programs preferred.
- Knowledge of Workday software or similar ERP software preferred.
