      Position Summary
      (Classified as: Student Services Profesional III)

      Full-time position available on or after September 5, 2023 for the Academic Success Center. (Position will work at the CSU Stanislaus-Stockton campus.)


      Under the general supervision of the Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC) the incumbent provides leadership to academic advising and support services at the Stockton Campus. The incumbent will work independently to meet goals and objectives and performs a variety of duties that build on the program and services as part of Warriors on the Way. The incumbent will act as a liaison for students and will develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators, in various departments on both Stan State campuses, key stakeholders, and partners in the external community that promote the success of students at the Stockton Campus with a focus on transfer students.

      Incumbent will review difficult individual, group or organizational problems, developing and recommending courses of action, and implementing proposed solutions. Delivers program services and academic advising to students, specializing in transfer student needs. The incumbent will utilize a combination of high-level interpersonal skills in working on complex problems from the investigation and analysis stage through the solution and implementation stage. Provides leadership and supervision of coaches and peer mentors in coordination with colleagues and transfer efforts at the Turlock Campus. The primary work location is the Stockton Campus with occasional travel to Turlock.


      Job Duties

      Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Provide collaborative leadership in the delivery and improvement of academic advising support services for students at the Stockton Campus, with a focus on Warriors on the Way and Stockton Scholar students.
      • Identify weaknesses or problems in the current advising program and propose solutions and recommendations for improvement.
      • Analyze problems of program-wide scope with considerable overlap with other student services and possessing more breadth than would normally be present in situations involving individual students or groups of students.
      • Lead peer mentors and AmeriCorps volunteers who will directly support a cohort of assigned students, determine appropriate caseload and management.
      • Develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators in various departments, partner community colleges, and key stakeholders to accomplish program goals.
      • Improve engagement, retention and graduation rates by staying current with research-based practices for assigned student populations.
      • Meet regularly with the Stockton Dean of Students to discuss and share recommendations about opportunities to support students at the Stockton campus academically, personally, and professionally.
      • Meet with relevant community partners such as College Possible and Stockton Scholars, as needed and/or requested.
      • Prepare and submit regular reports as required of Stan State leadership and grantors/community partners.
      • Provide academic advising, course selection and registration assistance on an individual or small group basis to new and continuing students.
      • Conduct in-depth analysis of student skills, abilities and previous academic performance as part of program planning and advising for new and continuing students.
      • Help students to select appropriate educational goals and implement corrective measures to alleviate any deficiencies.
      • Partner with Student Affairs staff at the Stockton campus to address student needs, offering appropriate referral and follow-up.
      • Provide presentations at New Student Orientation and assist in NSO advising sessions as assigned.
      • Maintain current knowledge of resources, majors, prerequisites, general education and graduation requirements, University procedures, rules and regulation along with other student services.
      • Maintain detailed and current records on assigned student population.
      • Monitor academic performance of WOW and Stockton Scholar students.
      • Assist and participate in the formulation and implementation of organizational goals and objectives.
      • Participate in regular department and team meetings.
      • Represent the university and ASC at specified regional professional association conferences and professional development workshops.
      • Serve on department, division and campus-wide committees as the ASC representative.
      • Perform other duties as assigned by the director to ensure the success of the ASC, Stockton Scholar cohort and the WOW program on behalf of the university, students, employers and alumni.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

      Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

      Preferred Qualifications


      • Earned Master’s degree.
      • Demonstrated experience in the California State University system.
      • Demonstrated experience working with community college transfer students.
      • Proven experience in developing, implementing, and administrating programs related to student success.

      • General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus.
      • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
      • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
      • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
      • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
      • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
      • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.

      • Employee will be required to work daily at a computer for long periods of time and to travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.

      Salary Range

      Anticipated salary will be $5,025 – $5,528 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full SSP III range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month)
