Academic Business Analyst
Job Profile
The University of Glasgow has launched an exciting, strategic transformation programme: covering major changes to the staff and student experience through the creation of the Transformation Team to bring organisational, process, system, and service improvements. The ambition for the transformation is significant and University-wide, addressing challenges as diverse as culture change, organisational redesign, development of new service delivery models and improved end to end practices and processes.
As the Academic Business Analyst, you will report to the Academic Lead for the Transformation Programme and work in partnership with other members of the Transformation Team. Your academic experience will enable you to understand the current organisational situation, identify future needs and create solutions to help meet those needs. Your initial focus will be on assessment and feedback policy and practice changes and on the implementation of appropriate software systems to support these changes, for the Institution.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide specialist academic advice and recommendations on business analysis to ensure outcomes are aligned with the University’s vision and business strategy using academic analytics, tools and methods.
2. Critically assess the performance of current services and processes to identify improvement opportunities, making high level decisions to inform the best way forward by defining academic needs and requirements.
3. Constructively and expertly challenge, and act as a critical friend, to achieve solutions that are fit for purpose, through academic knowledge of the sector, scoping appropriate change and shaping potential solutions.
4. Use influence to help colleagues understand how technology is changing behaviour and the challenges and opportunities this presents.
5. Liaise, communicate and build relationships with other stakeholders across the University and project working groups to support the achievement of University objectives, initiatives and changing priorities.
6. Conduct analysis, present results and put forward recommendations through briefings, presentations or written reports to inform decision making including the production of detailed requirements, benefits and business cases.
7. Manage delegated responsibility for WCGT project budgets to support the achievement of objectives, if and where appropriate.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Either: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12, (PhD), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s). Or, the ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles.
A2 Specialist knowledge and understanding of systems, tools and methods as an Academic Business Analyst gained whilst working in organisations undergoing transformational change or providing input to, and analysis on, substantial academic projects.
A3 Specialist knowledge and understanding of work practices, policies, procedures, and technologies relevant to academic communities within Higher Education, which may include broader sector/commercial awareness.
Desirable:
B1 Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of complex large-scale project design and delivery.
B2 Knowledge of web-based and software tools and how they could be best utilised to enhance the student and staff experience at the University.
B3 Knowledge of SWOT analysis (or similar), and creation of design principles and key performance indicators.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Skilled facilitator able to employ a robust, flexible and resilient approach with different stakeholders in a complex and sometimes challenging environment.
C2 Excellent organisational skills and ability to plan, progress and prioritise work activities effectively.
C3 Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, following professional guidelines and/or organisational policy, applying initiative and using independent judgement.
C4 Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
C5 Specialist analytical and complex problem-solving capability including the ability to make sense of complex problems quickly, using external benchmarking data to develop practical solutions.
C6 IT literate including applying Microsoft Office suite tools.
C7 Able to use academic expertise to develop high level requirements, as-is and to-be process modelling and business capability mapping.
C8 Ability to apply specialist skills to identify risks, dependencies and blockers using a range of tools to manage and mitigate the impact of these.
C9 Ability to build credibility and work collaboratively to manage a diverse range of stakeholders.
C10 Ability to establish effective working relationships and influence others.
C11 Ability to expertly present data that challenges assumptions.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience as an academic business analyst working within Higher Education work practices, policies and procedures.
E2 Experience of working within a Higher Education environment as an academic.
E3 Proven experience of evaluating and establishing requirements using specialist analysis tools and techniques gained in industry, the public sector, academia and/or consultancy to develop/design solutions.
E4 Experience of working in an open, iterative and collaborative way in a multidisciplinary team delivering substantial transformational change.
E5 Experience of leading academic business analysis activities to develop strategic insights that inform policy and service propositions.
E6 Experience of developing reports, presentations and workshops to present insights from analysis activity and/or to present findings and recommendations for transformational change.
Desirable:
F1 Experience of transformational change in Higher Education environments.
F2 Experience of shared academic/service design and delivery.
F3 Experience of producing business cases, process mapping and assessing business readiness for change.
F4 Experience of working in an Agile way.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £37,474 - £42,155 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and fixed term to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
The University would consider a secondment opportunity for this post. University of Glasgow applicants should seek clearance for release for secondment from their line manager before making a formal application.
