Job description

999 Emergency Call Handler (EMD) - Wakefield & York

Are you bored of the Monday to Friday 9 till 5 rat race? Are you looking for a job that offers different working patterns to suit your home life? Do you want to do something meaningful and fulfilling? Are you already working in a call centre that has no real purpose or are you simply looking for a career?

If the answer is YES to any of the above, a job with Yorkshire Ambulance Service in our Emergency Operations Centres may just be the role for you!

You would become part of a team delivering an invaluable service to the patients of Yorkshire. We are an ambitious and challenging organisation which has a passion for high quality patient care.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust is expanding our York site and are now recruiting for 999 Call Handlers (Emergency Medical Dispatchers EMD) in our Emergency (999) Operations Centre based in York and Wakefield

There is also plenty of opportunity for additional earnings on top of the advertised wage due to working unsocial hours, for example: after 8pm and before 6am Monday to Friday and all weekends.

Start dates will be from March 2023 onwards.

The attached example rota includes a mixture of working unsociable hours, weekends, bank holidays and the Christmas/New Year period.

As a 999 Call Handler (EMD), your role is to answer Emergency and Non-Emergency calls within our Emergency Operations Centre. This could include:

  • Taking Emergency Calls from members of the public and giving the appropriate advice to care for the patient until the ambulance arrives on scene.
  • Taking emergency calls from the Police and Fire Services.
  • Taking emergency and non-emergency bookings from Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Nurses and Hospitals for patient transfers.
  • Informing Police, Fire and other agencies about incidents.
  • Assisting ambulance crews and dispatchers with information and directions as and when necessary e.g. during a Major incident.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) NHS Trust geographically covers nearly 6,000 square miles of varied terrain, from isolated moors and dales to urban areas, coastline and inner cities.

We serve a population of over five million people across Yorkshire and the Humber and strive to ensure that patients receive the right response to their care needs as quickly as possible, wherever they live.

We employ more than 5,800 staff, who together with over 1,100 volunteers, enable us to provide a vital 24-hour, seven-days-a-week, emergency and healthcare service.

Our values: Compassion, One Team, Integrity, Innovation, EmpowermentandResilienceare at the heart of all we do.

What we can offer:
  • Flexible working including part-time hours, and flexible hours.
  • 27 days annual leave, increasing to 33 with service (pro rata for part time).
  • Sell annual leave scheme.
  • Contributory Pension.
  • NHS Discounts including shops, restaurants, gyms, mobile phone, and insurance.
  • Dedicated employee assistance and counselling service.
  • Opportunities for progression and development through ongoing training.
  • Full YAS uniform included.
As a minimum, you must have 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language or an NVQ Level 3 in a relevant subject. If you do not have these but have vast experience in customer service/admin roles we would also like to hear from you.

Please note that until the expansion work is completed, your initial period will be in Gildersome, York or Wakefield (2-3 weeks training) and then York or Wakefield (2 weeks mentorship and first few months of employment).

Whilst this work is completed, we will pay any reasonable and appropriate travel expenses incurred until your move to the expanded York Control Room (if York is your preferred location).

If you are successful at the shortlisting stage of the process you will be invited to complete an online assessment, which you must pass to be offered an interview.

Please note, we ask that all those successful at interview are able to commit to 100% attendance on the training course and mentorship periods.

Classroom training will be office hours Monday to Friday at either Gildersome, York or Wakefield. We have a two-tiered structured approach to our training; initially learning how to process Health Care Professional calls. Once you are comfortable and competent with these calls you will then go through a thorough training package to enable you to take 999 calls and speak to members of the public.

Previous applicants who have been unsuccessful in the EMD/EOC training course within the last 6 months need not apply.

Please note we will shortlist at various stages to ensure a quick response to your application.
