999 Emergency Call Handler (EMD) - Wakefield & York

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust is expanding our York site and are now recruiting for 999 Call Handlers (Emergency Medical Dispatchers EMD) in our Emergency (999) Operations Centre based in York and Wakefield
There is also plenty of opportunity for additional earnings on top of the advertised wage due to working unsocial hours, for example: after 8pm and before 6am Monday to Friday and all weekends.
Start dates will be from March 2023 onwards.
The attached example rota includes a mixture of working unsociable hours, weekends, bank holidays and the Christmas/New Year period.
As a 999 Call Handler (EMD), your role is to answer Emergency and Non-Emergency calls within our Emergency Operations Centre. This could include:
- Taking Emergency Calls from members of the public and giving the appropriate advice to care for the patient until the ambulance arrives on scene.
- Taking emergency calls from the Police and Fire Services.
- Taking emergency and non-emergency bookings from Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Nurses and Hospitals for patient transfers.
- Informing Police, Fire and other agencies about incidents.
- Assisting ambulance crews and dispatchers with information and directions as and when necessary e.g. during a Major incident.

Please note that until the expansion work is completed, your initial period will be in Gildersome, York or Wakefield (2-3 weeks training) and then York or Wakefield (2 weeks mentorship and first few months of employment).
Whilst this work is completed, we will pay any reasonable and appropriate travel expenses incurred until your move to the expanded York Control Room (if York is your preferred location).
If you are successful at the shortlisting stage of the process you will be invited to complete an online assessment, which you must pass to be offered an interview.
Please note, we ask that all those successful at interview are able to commit to 100% attendance on the training course and mentorship periods.
Classroom training will be office hours Monday to Friday at either Gildersome, York or Wakefield. We have a two-tiered structured approach to our training; initially learning how to process Health Care Professional calls. Once you are comfortable and competent with these calls you will then go through a thorough training package to enable you to take 999 calls and speak to members of the public.
Previous applicants who have been unsuccessful in the EMD/EOC training course within the last 6 months need not apply.
