The Department
The Art and Design department is a vibrant and creative hub in the heart of the School. The philosophy of the department is of an integrated department with all the staff working as a team, sharing in the planning and decision making at all levels of departmental work. This includes exhibitions and open days, moderation of examination work and organisation of trips and co-curricular workshops.
We hope to demonstrate the department's belief in the importance of drawing, design, visual language and ideas, by stimulating the imagination and creative energy of pupils through their contact with various media and tools in the workshop areas.
The current Art and Design Building includes a number of specialist workshop areas with easy access to a central " core" on both floors. This building provides facilities for Fine Art, 3D Design, Ceramics, Printing, History of Art, Photography and Fashion Textiles. The Merritt Centre provides and exceptional space for displaying work created from the Art and Design department and external Artists and Designers.
On the ground floor is the 3D Design workshop. The workshop is well equipped, and work is undertaken using a range of resistant materials such as wood, metal and plastic, with a strong emphasis on experimentation and iterative design. At one end of the open plan workshop is a metal work area including a forge and jewellery bays, at the other is a range of machinery and tools including a laser cutter and small 3D printer. Space as always is of a premium therefore it is essential the space is well maintained.
The department also includes:
- A specialist Art Textile room equipped for photographic silk screen, sublimation printing and batik, as well as stitch and weave
- A well-equipped Ceramics/ 3D room with two kilns, pug mill and plaster equipment
- A design suite used by Photography and Design students allowing students easy access to relevant software, including 2D/3D software
- A spacious darkroom with 6 enlargers, and a good-sized preparation area, cameras for loan and good print processing facilities.
- A large open plan studio with facilities for etching, lino and mono-printing. This room is used for drawing and painting. This studio is available for U6 students to work independently.
- There is an entrance foyer containing a flexible photographic studio / display area
- There is a library area, providing a resource for students from all Art & Design subject areas in the block to research and browse. The department holds a good selection of books
- There is a Lecture Theatre which is used for History of Art and Film Studies
Curriculum
Years 7- 9
Pupils follow an Art and Design course, which covers the 3 main specialist areas of Art. 3D and Textiles. Looking at the work of artists and designers forms a key part of the projects undertaken.
Years 10 and 11
Art and Design is a popular option choice and where possible we enable the girls to specialise in different media or complete mixed media projects. We currently offer Art and Design Fine Art, 3D Design and Textiles.
Years 12 and 13
Art and Design are popular option choices. Giris are encouraged to follow individual pathways and are given appropriate support for their work from both teachers and technicians. We currently offer Fine Art, 3D Design, DT Fashion Textiles, Photography and History of Art. A good number of students progress to Art and Design Degree and Foundation courses.
Main duties
- Maintain clean and safe 3D workshops, including servicing of some equipment.
- Demonstrate the safe use of tools and machinery and assist pupils in producing work.
- Prepare materials and resources for use in lessons as requested by teaching staff.
- Construct 3D pieces such as canvas stretchers, frames, armatures etc as requested.
- Support the use of laser cutters and 3D printers.
- Deliver an activity workshop once a week for 6-10 for pupils to explore a variety of 3D techniques.
- Ensure the orderly use of materials and equipment so as to avoid waste.
- Order stock and materials for the Art and Design Department and compiling stock take when requested.
- Assist with installing exhibitions especially during examination moderation and
Commemoration Day at the end of the Summer Term.
- Maintain the display of work around the school and within the Art and Design department.
- Assist with storage of artwork, to keep it in good, undamaged condition.
- Keep Risk Assessments and Health and Safety Documents up to date.
- Undertake other duties as reasonably requested by the Head of Dept.
- Some knowledge of Photographic/ digital image making would be welcomed.
There is the option for this role to be residential which will include some duties in a boarding house.
