Young Persons Practitioner

Salary: £22,500 per annum

Location: East Cornwall - Homebased - around these areas Caradon, Looe, Saltash, Liskeard

Contract/Hours: Permanent - Full-Time - 37 hours per week. This is a flexible role requiring you to work in accordance with the needs of the young people you are supporting. This will require some evening work of approximately 2-3 evenings up until the hours of 8pm and some occasional weekend work.

A bit about the role

Action for Children provide a number of services across Cornwall, Kernow Connect, Cornwall SPACE,) and the Adolescent Intervention Service (Connect+).

Connect+ covers three localities West, Mid and East Cornwall. This role is working across East Cornwall. Our team of six practitioners work closely with young people to better understand their experiences and support them to be safe and achieve their aspirations.

How you'll help to create brighter futures

In the role of Young Persons Practitioner, you will have an amazing opportunity to walk alongside young people to get a better understanding of their lived experiences. These lived experiences may cause a number of presenting behaviours which may put young person at risk of harm such as exploitation, criminal activity, missing episodes or self-harm. Through building a relationship of trust, you will begin to explore, challenge and support these behaviours. You'll be providing an intensive support service for young people, providing insight for other professionals and supporting safety plans. The dedicated team will support Cornwall Council's Family Assessment and Support (FAS) Teams. On occasion this team will also support child protection and children in care; in particular where there are high level concerns about exploitation or emotional health and wellbeing.

What you will be doing:

  • Assessing young people's situations with them and provide the support they need.
  • Supporting the FAS teams in the East, Mid and West, but also on occasions child protection and children in care where there are high level concerns about exploitation or emotional health and well-being.
  • Communicating effectively with relevant social workers and other key partners.
  • Providing a befriending service that will be easier for young people to access.
  • Giving young people at risk the opportunity of a different approach without the barriers that some young people feel about their involvement with statutory services.

Let's talk about you

In the role of Young Persons Practitioner, we're ideally looking for someone who has:

  • An NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a related field (or willingness to work towards).
  • Excellent group work and communication skills with young people and team members.
  • Have experience of working in partnership with agencies to support children and young people.
  • Experience of working with young people who present with needs relating to risk.
