An Exciting opportunity has become available in the Breast Imaging department for a Radiology Department Assistant to join our team.

Our friendly and progressive Norwich Breast Unit is part of the QSI Accredited Imaging Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and has a lot to offer an enthusiastic individual. We aim to always be at the forefront of developments.

The Breast Imaging department provides imaging support to the Symptomatic Breast care service and supports the National Breast Screening Programme.

The work in the department is unique covering all aspects of the patient care pathway from diagnosis through to treatments. Duties include caring for patients, assisting radiographic staff in carrying out x-ray examinations and associated procedures. You will also assist Radiologists in Ultrasound procedures and biopsies and act as a chaperone. You will also be expected to cannulate patients prior to specialist examinations.

We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic team player who is motivated, able to organise their own workload and work well with others.

You must be able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team. You will become actively involved in a broad range of duties including the clerical work connected with patient administration. There is a structured in-house training program covering all aspects of duties you will be expected to undertake.

The post holder will be based within the NNUH and join a small busy team of dedicated staff.

Familiarity with NBSS, RIS and PAS computers systems is desirable, but this is not essential as training will be given.

The post holder will work with all members of the clinical team within the multi-disciplinary framework. To contribute to the provision of a high standard of care for patients. Carry out some duties unaided, at the discretion of qualified staff. Support and help all members of the clinical team in care delivery.

  • Assist the radiologist with all aspects of breast ultrasound, including changing patients in preparation for examination.
  • Assist Radiologists and radiographers, with x-ray guided procedures.
  • To cannulate patients prior to Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) procedures.
  • Assist with the induction and training of new Assistant Practitioners in nursing duties.
  • To chaperone the radiologist as required.
  • Prepare the clinical areas and set up trolleys for procedures.
  • Assist in making patients welcome to the clinical area and participate in the admission process and assist where appropriate with dressing/undressing.
  • Prepare trolleys for breast localisations and x-ray guided biopsies, using knowledge of aseptic technique.
  • Help with distressed patients, unwell patients, explain procedures to them, and take care of them, reassuring them as requires, reporting any problems to the person undertaking the examination.
  • To be aware of client’s emotional state following bad news and recognise when to seek assistance from senior staff.
  • Have an awareness of the patient’s condition, noting any observed changes and report to relevant trained staff i.e. Consultant Radiologists, Radiographers and nursing staff.
