Our Minor Warships & Auxiliary Vessels team in Victoria, British Columbia, is looking for a Specification Writer.
How will you contribute to the team?
Reports to the Planning and Reporting Supervisor, Specification Writer will develop technically sound repair specifications for various maintenance projects including docking work periods (DWPs) for all the vessels in the MWAV contract. He/she will ensure all lessons learned from past dockings and remarks mentioned in the last Annual Condition Survey (ACS) is incorporated into the most current package being developed and particularized for each vessel.
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Work with the SLDPI team to identify lessons learned and ensure required repairs are incorporated into docking packages.
- Develop technically sound repair specifications utilizing current engineering practices and regulations.
- Amend Preventative Maintenance (PM) as required and submit for approval following the proper procedure.
- Develop spreadsheets to aid in analyzing PM data.
- Participate in the continuous improvement program within SLDPI and PMO section.
Job functions for the Intermediate Specification Writer:
- Work with SLDPI (i.e. the PM Technicians, the Planning and Reporting Supervisor, the Ship Maintenance Coordinator Supervisor, and the Technical Authority) in identifying, creating and scheduling repair specifications including docking work packages for the vessels;
- Implement Engineering Changes (ECs) into the DWP packages.
- Participate in the PM Working Groups whose purpose is to improve the quality and accuracy of all Preventive Maintenance Routines currently under the ISS Contract; guided in part by Procedure 300-4 Preventive Maintenance Routine Amendments.
- Participate in a DWP wash-up / lessons learned meeting within 30 days of vessel transfer back to DND to include the LOM, ALOM, SMCS, PRS, and follow-up to ensure these items are carried forward.
- Assist with other duties as determined by Planning Reporting Supervisor.
Supervisory and Leadership Role:
- Occasionally provide guidance/training to others.
What will you contribute?
Education and knowledge requirements:
The Intermediate Specification Writer will possess,
- A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated marine experience within the last 10 years; AND one (1) of the following:
- A minimum 3-year technologist program diploma offered by a recognized technical institute; OR
- Certified as a technologist by a recognized provincial, state or federal (national) licensing body in a relevant field; OR
- Certified to the QL-6B Level of training
Training and relative work experience:
- Project management experience is considered an asset.
- Sound knowledge of principals of naval architecture is considered an asset.
- Ship construction/repair maintenance experience is an asset.
- Strong command of Microsoft office applications.
- Sound understanding of DND internal workings and how it maintenance system works;
- Familiarization with ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001.
- A working knowledge of the major Classification society Rules, SOLAS and Transport Canada is considered an asset.
Physical requirements:
- Able to crawl through tanks or small constricting areas within a ship.
- Able to climb tanks steps, ladders, and shipboard ladders.
- Able to climb from dry dock deck level to the inside of the ship bilges a number of times.
- Able to enter confined spaces and complete assigned work.
- Able to wear respirators to complete assigned work.
- Able to remain on your feet for extended periods (five hours or longer).
- Able to work in various weather conditions (rain / cold / snow / etc.).
- Able to carry / lift loads of up to 15 kg.
