Who we are:

West Midlands Police Museum exists to celebrate the policing heritage of the West Midlands, and use it to engage with communities to build trust and confidence in policing. At the West Midlands Heritage Museum, we have renovated an old overnight holding station to now be a beacon of history, educating visitors through our many interactive displays. We have information on how WMP has evolved over time, pieces of equipment used by police officers through time and even a mystery for our visitors to solve when they explore the lower level. We are open up to seven days a week for general opening, school visits, corporate events, talks and guided tours.

Why we need your help:

We re-opened in April 2022 after extensive refurbishment and are looking for new and innovative ways to grow our audience, reach more people and ensure our events are well attended. Our marketing budget is very limited, so it is important that we identify cost-effective or free ways to reach new audiences of all ages, engage them with innovative content and ensure the museum is seen as an attractive visitor attraction.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a team of enthusiastic volunteers to assist us with any of the following:

  • Planning and scheduling social media posts to market the museum
  • Researching and writing articles about the museum to be used in promotional pieces
  • Work with the heritage officer who lead on marketing the museum
  • Research cost effective ways to promote the museum successfully

Skills and Competencies

Essential:

  • Friendly and approachable
  • Good communications skills & a good level of written and spoken English
  • Reliable with good time-keeping skills
  • Happy to work independently or as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and good observational skills
  • Administration skills (Microsoft Office, Internet)

  • Where appropriate, volunteers should use public transport. We will cover travel expenses to a maximum daily limit of a 1 day network Zones 1-5 Unlimited regional bus*, tram and train travel within the specified West Midlands rail zones (https://ticketing.networkwestmidlands.com/Home/ShowTicket/38)
  • Mileage will be in reimbursed at 45p per mile using the Michelin guide https://www.viamichelin.co.uk/
  • Volunteers are eligible to claim £5.00 towards their lunch if they volunteer over 4 hours on given day.
  • This role description is intended as an indicator of general areas of activity and will be amended with any changing needs of West Midlands Police It is expected that the volunteer will be flexible, using this document as a framework

Hours:

We are looking for volunteers to commit at least 16 hours per month ideally for a minimum of 3 months. Time and date to be agreed with the department supporting the volunteer.
