We have a placement opportunity available this summer for a highly motivated student who is eager to spend time as part of our creative and experienced Analysis Services team working world-wide to facilitate the growth of wind energy.
This placement is based within our Pre-construction Wind Analysis Services team in Bristol, UK. We are located across the globe, but we work together as one team. We are a global team of highly experienced experts with practical knowledge from projects all over the world. We are committed to supporting our clients’ efforts to achieve their project milestones, within targeted cost, schedule, and quality parameters, so the resulting projects operate as expected.
The combined Wind and Solar Analysis team now totals more than 35 staff in offices in Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and USA. We are involved throughout the development and operation of utility scale onshore wind, offshore wind and solar farms. We work both for internal clients, within K2 Management, and external clients varying from the largest global wealth management firms to small independent developers. All rely on our insight and experience to improve their generation projects. We provide a full range of analysis services from early project development support through to financial-grade energy yield assessments based on site wind data measurements or operational turbine SCADA data.
Job description:
The Analysis Services Team work closely together to ensure that we offer the highest quality service to our clients. We work on both pre-construction and operational wind farms. All our analysts have solid numerical ability, good technical judgement and carry out work involving some or all of the following tasks:
- Analysis and interpretation of measured wind data
- Analysis of long-term trends using reference meteorological data
- Modelling of wind flow over wind farm sites using CFD and mesoscale models
- Calculation of long-term wind farm energy yield, including consideration of energy yield losses such as wake effects, turbine performance and environmental constraints such as noise
- Written and verbal communication of complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Effective teamwork in order to deliver projects on time and to budget
K2 Management is committed to the delivery of high quality and accurate outputs; therefore, research and development (R&D) is an important aspect of our work. In addition to core consultancy work, every member of staff is encouraged to contribute to R&D to improve our understanding of wind farms and ensure we are working at the cutting edge of the industry. Past R&D projects have included industry-leading studies into real-world turbine performance, the largest published validation of offshore wind farm energy yield assessment and developing our internal CFD (OpenFOAM) and mesoscale (WRF) modelling workflows.
Our working environment is open plan, allowing junior staff immediate opportunity to work closely with experienced senior staff.
As an intern you will work closely with analysts to support our work and contribute to develop new tools or knowledge to improve our processes.
Essential Criteria:
- Beginning the final year of a degree course in engineering, physics, meteorology or mathematics in Autumn 2023
- Strong interest in renewable energy
- A-Level or equivalent in Maths with grade A or higher
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of computer programming, particularly Python
- Great communication and reporting skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- The flexibility and enthusiasm to thrive in an expanding business
- Advanced computing aptitude, including data handling and analysis
- Interest in fluid dynamics
Duration:
The internship will last for a minimum of 3 months with an ideal start date of June 2023. The start date is flexible to suit the availability of the successful candidate.
