An opportunity exists for a Welding Engineer within New Build and Components DBU. The successful applicant will be working on new technology development programmes specific to welding applications for product to be installed on Nuclear Steam Raising Plants.

What you will be doing:
Rolls-Royce Submarines has initiated a bold strategy for future technology for welding capability. This is to provide improved operational efficiency, process robustness and resilience to understood business challenges, we’re seeking to establish a welding future capability team to evolve our existing welding and volumetric inspection processes into a ‘green button’ application platform with ‘Right first time’ being assured.
From origin, you’ll be a key facet of a dedicated team targeted towards achieving an ambitious automated and digital programme of work.

  • Develop and deploy ‘state of the art’ welding processes
  • From first principles, apply digital technologies to ensure a 100% RFT

  • Work with both arc and power beam manufacturing applications

  • Creation of welding procedures, qualifications, and other cell specific documentation such as PFMEA’s and Control Plans for any new technologies to be implemented
  • An opportunity to work closely with other Special Processes engineering disciplines and potentially gain invaluable experience within NDE, Chemical Processing and PWHT
  • Opportunity to work with our major technology partners developing new welding capabilities.

To be successful in this role you will need to:
  • Given the technical demands within this role, candidates must have a minimum of a HNC (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline
  • Fundamental knowledge of DFMEA / Expert Elicitation / PFMEA to influence Product definition / final form manufacture (This is a skill not an accountability)
  • Formulate and implement relevant Internal coding requirements to achieve quality objectives
  • Develop, implement, maintain and continuously improve manufacturing processes and/or methods of manufacture
  • Fundamental understanding of problem-solving tools plus System Engineering principles
  • Responsible for understanding ‘key’ process variables plus the ability to instigate monitoring system to ensure manufacturing robustness
  • Define and analyse SPC data to ensure full manufacturing process control
  • Identify equipment upgrades / new equipment requirements and manage their validation
  • Responsible for defining process methods
  • Create / update process documentation & operating procedures
  • Ensure processes can meet the requirements for quality, cost, delivery and lead time
  • Work with neighbouring special processes such as NDE and chemical processes to assure product integrity.
  • Be a change agent for digitising manufacturing joining platforms
  • Understanding of design, materials and stress implications for vessel joining
Desirable skills:
  • An experience formulating Nuclear standard weld qualifications and the ability to cross reference Internal and International codes to achieve design intent
  • Clearly demonstrate a professional history of developing welding manufacturing processes within a Primary Nuclear environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all welding processes inclusive of Power Beam and solid solution joining

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
