Weekend Library Assistant

Weekend Library Assistant Walton-on-Thames, England

Surrey County Council
Full Time Walton-on-Thames, England 19560 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Job Introduction

Based at Walton Library, the starting salary for this role is £3,260 per annum for working 6 hours per week (Saturdays). The full-time equivalent salary is £19,560 per annum.

As a Weekend Library Assistant, you will bring your enthusiasm to a role that provides vital services to the people of Surrey.

There is something for everyone at our libraries... Curious readers come looking for their next adventure. Students meet to revise for their exams. Families gather for Storytime and Rhymetime. Special interest groups share their passions. Older people access resources and secure their bus pass. The library is many different things to many different people.

Customer service is at the forefront of what we do, and you will need to utilise your positive attitude and resilience to deal with a wide range of enquiries. Libraries are busy, lively places to work that require creativity and initiative to ensure every customer has the best experience possible.

An average day might involve providing book recommendations, helping a customer use Microsoft Office, and taking part in a children’s reading activity. You will also keep borrower records up to date and support library colleagues with events.

Our vision is for Surrey’s libraries to become hubs of the community that all are proud of. We are looking for someone who shares this goal and is committed to creating a library where everyone feels welcome and is treated with fairness and respect.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to upload your CV and answer the following questions:

  • What are your motivations for applying?
  • What do you think good customer service looks like from a Weekend Library Assistant?
  • Why do you feel the library is important to the community?
  • Describe a time when you pursued an opportunity to learn something new.

For more information, please find the full role profile below and refer to this before submitting your application. We also invite you to read our Life at Surrey handbook to see insights of the culture at Surrey and how, as a valued employee, you can help shape our Council.

Additional Information

The job advert closes at 23:59 on Sunday 14th May.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews to be held week commencing Monday 22nd May. You will be asked to answer a few questions and read a short story, with interview questions provided in advance.

There are no staff parking facilities at libraries in Surrey, however there are pay and display car parks close to most locations. If using public transport, please check what options are available for you to travel to individual locations, and when making your application, consider your travel costs and arrangements.
