An opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the team in the position of Water Quality Technician, as part of the Water and Ecology team, reporting to the Water Quality Project Manager. The primary purpose of the role will be to attend and investigate water pollution incidents; undertake field-based monitoring and collect environmental samples for laboratory analysis across the Thames Valley and Greater London area.
The role is home-based, and the postholder should be located in the Berkshire region, with easy vehicle access to major road networks
Weekly contractual hours of 45 hours per week; 8am until 6pm, five days per week with requirement for weekend and public holiday work on a flexible team rota pattern, and a 1- hour unpaid lunch break each day. There will also be an expectation to complete a reasonable amount of overtime as part of this role.
Your day will look like this:
- Attending and investigating water pollution incidents across Thames Valley & Greater London Area
- Undertaking proactive field monitoring works including water quality measurements and sampling
- Technical report writing in response to water pollution incidents
- Provision of accurate and timely information to line management
- Supporting team performance by sharing knowledge and best practices at all levels
- Any other duties for which the post holder is qualified and able to carry out
How you can help us with your experience:
Essential:
- Educated to degree level in a Biological or Environmental Sciences discipline
- A competent user of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Experience of water quality monitoring and an enthusiasm for working outdoors
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to pay close attention to detail
- A desire to develop project management skills
- A willingness to travel throughout the UK and Ireland, to work away and to work long days when required
- Full, clean, UK driving licence and comfortable driving a small van
- Right to work in the UK
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, following precise protocols
- Motivated and confident interacting with clients.
- Field sampling involves working in all weather conditions, and can be physically demanding- walking for varying distances, carrying equipment, bending for periods of time, working in and near water.
Desirable:
- Aquatic macro-invertebrate identification skills to Family level (e.g. BMWP);
- GIS skills
- Experience of sediment monitoring
- Experience in project management
- An understanding of water chemistry
- An understanding of the role of regulators, such as the Environment Agency
- An understanding of the role of laboratory analysis in environmental monitoring
- An understanding of the role of environmental monitoring regarding environmental compliance
