If you would like to be an On-Call Firefighter, you must be able to respond to your Fire Station within five minutes. However, if you can work remotely for your full-time employer, then you could work from ANY of our 12 On-Call Fire Stations.


The role involves a number of hours of flexible On-Call cover, where you must be available to attend emergencies via a pager.
We will provide you with a high level of training and a chance to be part of a professional team.


On-Call Firefighters are not always based at Fire Stations, they usually live or work in the local community


The essential requirements

  • Aged 18 and above on or before the initial course date
  • Able to reach the station within five minutes of an emergency at normal road speed
  • Able to attend a drill session once a week at your On-Call station
  • Have permission from your employer if responding to emergencies from work
  • Eligible to work in the UK



The Role

On-Call Firefighters do the same emergency work as Wholetime Firefighters, but they can also have other jobs too. While on duty, they carry a pager, which activates when they need to attend an incident.


On-call Firefighters receive a basic salary and are paid extra for any call out’s, training courses, drill sessions.


On average you could earn between £5000 and £8000 per year.

The Application Process

Once you have submitted your application and the address you have chosen to respond from has been verified (if remote working please put the fire station address), you will be invited to attend the following stages:


  • Invitation to meet the team at your local Fire Station where you will be able to observe a drill session and ask any questions that you may have (optional)
  • On-Call Firefighter Awareness Day (optional) – 28th October 2023
  • Role Related Physical – 25th November 2023
  • Written assessments – 7th December 2023, retest session 13th December 2023
  • On station discussion – W/C 15th January 2024
  • Pre-employment checks – January to April 2024


You must pass each stage of the process to progress to the next.

If successful in all assessments and pre-employment checks, you will be expected to attend the initial recruit training course, which will be taking place on the following dates:


  • Days 1-3 – 8th to 10th March 2024
  • Days 4-16 – 15th to 27th April 2024
  • Pass out Parade – 28th April 2024
