A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a forward-thinking, community focused and energised individual to join the delivery team for a 3-year Department for Transport Social Prescribing of Walking and Cycling Project. Working with a range of partners in Burmantofts Harehills and Richmond Hill area, the role will motivate, encourage, and support local communities to try various walking and cycling initiatives. The overall aim to increase levels of walking and cycling, whereby walking and cycling become a part of everyday life.
The purpose of the job will be:
The Activator role will inspire, motivate and support the communities of Burmantofts Harehills and Richmond Hill to become more active through walking and cycling more often; engaging with local people; understanding barriers to participation; working alongside them and other partners to develop their own solutions; and setting up a range of provision to meet need.
The role will take an asset-based community development approach, building trust, developing relationships and getting to know the local community. Working with a wide range of partners and providers: in the community, regionally and nationally to enhance the delivery of walking and cycling activities, that meet local need and are sustainable for the longer term.
The role will provide support to the effective monitoring and evaluation of the Project (based on the Department of Transport evaluation framework) and working with the Project Team develop an evidence base around any increases in participation of walking and cycling.
Responsibilities include:
- To lead the delivery of walking and cycling in the Burmantofts Harehills and Richmond Hill communities
- Develop links with existing community groups and utilise existing community facilities to support the provision of increased walking and cycling opportunities that are accessible for all
- To identify the issues preventing access to walking and cycling opportunities within communities and develop ways to overcome them
- To Inspire and attract participants through community engagement events and taster sessions
- To support the creation of innovative and imaginative projects to encourage local communities to actively engage in walking and cycling and physical activity
- To map the walking and cycling offers in each community and signpost people to them
- To explore other external funding opportunities to support sustainable walking and cycling activity within local communities
Skills include:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people at all levels and build relationships with a wide range of groups and partners
- Ability to lead and motivate others
- Able to project manage various programmes
- Ability to organise, promote and market activities / events / programmes
- Able to work as part of a team and on your own initiative including identifying needs and resolving problems with practical solutions
You should possess:
Educated to degree level or equivalent, or the experience and ability to work at this level.
Sound knowledge of physical activity / inactivity, moving more development type work with experience of successfully engaging with local communities and specific target groups. Understanding and practice of asset-based community development working with a knowledge of behaviour change models and theory.
