Job description
*** volunteering opportunity ***
Food Train is an award winning Scottish Charity providing services to older people who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability and we need your help!
We provide access to fresh food for our members by undertaking a weekly supermarket shop on their behalf and delivering it straight to them in their homes, unpacking it and storing it away for them if needed. It has become a vital service to many of our members due to a variety of age related health and isolation reasons.
The Glasgow branch of Food Train is currently seeking Volunteer Delivery Assistants for the service. Ideally, candidates will be able to donate their free time to volunteer any day from Tuesday-Friday, for approx 5 hours per shift. We have our own fleet of transit vans with volunteer drivers so assistants arent required to have a driving license as others will drive the vans.
The roles involve collecting orders from the days designated supermarket, delivering them out to our members, unpacking and storing items away and dealing with the payments. Delivery assistants will be in charge of the daily cash float and basic addition/subtraction maths in order to ensure correct payment/change is received.
The role can be quite physical at times due to the nature of Glasgow's architecture and you may have to carry a couple of boxes up several flights of stairs, particularly in the City's tenement buildings which don't have lift access! You will certainly make a dent in your step count for the day!
Teams of 2 or 3 volunteers undertake up to 15 deliveries per day in a specific area of the city with staggered start times from 9.30am each day.
Its a great opportunity to get out and about, see some of the City, stay active and meet loads of new people! Plus you'll be making a HUGE difference to the lives of older people in Glasgow.
Although we are unable to provide pay, we can offer endless cups of coffee/tea plus travel expenses within Glasgow, application to the PVG scheme, volunteer uniforms and some quality banter!
If this sounds like something you'd like to get involved in, please get in touch!
