Here at NYP it’s our people that really count, their different perspectives, experiences, skills and backgrounds which truly make a difference to our communities and especially making North Yorkshire one of the safest counties in England.

We have 2 full-time opportunities to join the Supporting Victims Service, part of the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner's Officer as a Victim Care Coordinator (VCC). The Supporting Victims Service was created by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire in 2015 following the Ministry of Justice decision to devolve funding to support victims of crime to Police and Crime Commissioners locally. The service was created to support victims to cope with the immediate impact of crime, and recover from the harm caused in line with victims’ entitlements under the Code of Practice for Victims of Crime

The successful candidate will be central to providing a valuable triage service for victims' resident in North Yorkshire, contacting them to offer immediate emotional and practical support over the phone, assessing need and providing referral to specialist commissioned services, to help them to come to terms with the aftermath of a crime.

The core focus of the roles will be to offer support to victims of crime and work closely with wider commissioned services to ensure victims get the right service at the right time to get their lives back on track and reduce repeat victimisation. You will achieve this by working closely with the police and partners, contacting those affected by crime, whether reported or not, including victims, bereaved relatives, those under 18 with consent, parents, or guardians of victims under 18 and members of staff where a business has been a victim of crime.

Support can include discussing a range of practical and emotional support available for victims, referring them to specialist commissioned services such as counselling / talking therapy services, Restorative Justice Services or to a Case Manager who can meet with a victim face to face. If necessary VCCs also help victims access support provided by wider organisations.

To be successful at this role, you will have:
  • Experience of working in a Customer Service Environment and giving support and guidance to clients.

  • The ability to listen and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, including excellent telephone skills.

  • The ability to deal sensitively with challenging and often emotionally charged situations.

  • Highly developed IT skills and experienced in Microsoft Office (inc. Excel).

  • The ability to problem solve and find appropriate solutions for victims.

  • The ability to work in partnership with wider departments / agencies.

  • The ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.

  • A professional manner and drive to achieve targets and deadlines in the interests of delivering a quality service to victims of crime in North Yorkshire.

  • An understanding of the importance of client confidentiality, data protection and safeguarding.

  • Call centre experience would also be advantageous.

In return you can expect a strong commitment to your own personal development, tailored to your own particular circumstances. We can offer access to relevant training support and encouragement from managers and peers in order to help you achieve your personal goals.

You’ll work for an organisation that cares about the well-being of its personnel, and actively supports people so they can perform to their best at work.

In addition, we offers a range of benefits including:

  • Opportunity for flexible working for a number of its support staff
  • 24 days holiday entitlement, increasing to 29 / 30 days with length of service (plus bank holidays)
  • Access to onsite Health and Wellbeing Services
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Support for further professional development
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Access to a fantastic range of exclusive discounts on well-known online and high street retailers
  • Representation through Unison, recognised trade unions
  • Access to a number of Inclusion and Diversity support networks.
