Job description
Citi's Sustainability & ESG team is responsible for the development and execution of Citi's Sustainable Progress Strategy and reports to the Chief Sustainability Officer. The team’s key objectives include coordinating Citi’s net zero plan, overseeing our $1 trillion sustainable finance goal and coordinating key disclosures including Citi’s ESG report and ESG ratings. The Sustainability & ESG team manages environmental, climate change, human rights and other stakeholder and business issues in partnership with Citi's businesses, risk, functions and operational teams.
The role holder will work closely with internal partners including Banking, Capital Markets and Advisory (BCMA), Markets, Risk, Legal, Governmental Affairs and Communications colleagues to support Citi in achieving its sustainability goals, support regulatory compliance and protect Citi’s reputation in the EMEA region. The position reports to the EMEA Head of Sustainability and ESG in the Enterprise Services and Public Affairs function, based in London.
In the EMEA region, Citi undertakes business in almost 110 countries, with a physical presence in 55 countries and 35,000 employees.
Job responsibilities
- Horizon-scanning: Maintain awareness of emerging regional and country-based sustainability issues. Identify areas of potential risks and opportunities and support the development of a strategic response in key areas.
- Regulation: Act as an advisor to internal partners in EMEA on potential solutions and input to key deliverables which may include risk and/or opportunity assessments, strategy reviews and external reporting. Maintain awareness of new developments in regulation and supervisory expectations in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Provide input to governmental and regulators’ policy consultations as required.
- Stakeholder engagement: Support internal partners to respond to enquiries from regulators, clients and other stakeholders. Participate in meetings with external stakeholders to represent Citi’s sustainability, climate change and ESG approach and to share best practices. Represent Citi in industry initiatives and develop partnerships.
- Training and knowledge-sharing: Support the development of formal and informal training. Promote efficient information-sharing across businesses and geographies to ensure that internal partners receive relevant information on sustainability risks and opportunities.
- Management reporting: Prepare and coordinate meeting materials and input to management reporting as required.
- Sustainable finance: Support the continuing development of governance and strategy for sustainable finance opportunities. Participate in the review of individual sustainable finance products and transactions as a sustainability subject-matter expert.
- Support colleagues in the wider Enterprise Services and Public Affairs team including on executive briefings and employee engagement.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and approximately 5+ years of experience gained in sustainability and/or ESG issues from a management consulting, financial services, Non-Governmental Organization, policy or industry background.
- Strong interest in and knowledge of environmental and social issues (e.g. climate change, energy transition, biodiversity, human rights).
- Strong PowerPoint and presentation skills and excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Knowledge of current and forthcoming sustainability-related regulation, including external reporting requirements (for example CSRD, SEC proposed climate rule, ISSB, TCFD).
- Strong research and critical thinking skills, ability to evaluate and assess complex topics.
- Able to facilitate creative problem-solving in collaboration with a wide range of colleagues.
- Exceptional work ethic, ability to work under deadline and strong attention to detail.
- Project management skills, including the ability to create work plans and meet deadlines alongside a business-as-usual flow of tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a team.
- Able to work in a multi-layered organizational structure across businesses, geographies and legal entities within the region.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of banking supervisors’ expectations in the region.
- Knowledge of clean technologies and public policy impacting key sectors (e.g. energy, transport, industrial materials) in the EMEA region would be an advantage.
