Vice President of Manufacturing Cambridge, East of England, England

Higher Steaks
Full Time Cambridge, East of England, England 45000 - 60000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Want to help change how the world is fed?

Higher Steaks aims to transform the global food system by making delicious and nutritious food – from animal cells and plants. We are pioneering the development of cultivated meat to solve some of the world’s growing challenges in health, sustainability and animal welfare.

We're a purpose, science and engineering-driven company dedicated to creating breakthrough technologies that will push the boundaries of what’s possible – delivering innovations that benefit people, the planet and animals.

Our brilliant team are experts in their respective fields, drawn from around the world. We’re passionate, curious, innovative and at the forefront of the ground-breaking work being done in this exciting and rapidly growing sector. Higher Steaks is a well-funded biotech company; we’ve experienced spectacular growth over the last few years and continue to accelerate every month.

We are growing rapidly again this year so this is a great time to join us and solve one of the most important challenges we face today!

The role

We are looking for a VP of Manufacturing to lead the definition, development and implementation of our manufacturing strategy; this will be a critical part of our continuing growth as we move towards full commercialisation and having a range of products to market in different geographies. What we’re doing hasn’t been done before - there is no ‘playbook’. That means we’ll need you to be innovative and creative, as well as have previous experience in turning your vision into reality.

Our ideal candidate is someone who wants the excitement of writing our playbook for manufacturing a product that sits at the interface of a number of disciplines (such as mammalian cell bioprocessing, biochemical engineering, food science, nutrition, and food packaging). You may already have experience at the VP level or be someone whose next career step is to the VP level.

The role will be a hybrid one, with the post-holder expected to spend typically at least 3 days per week on-site at our new state-of-the-art facility in Cambridge, UK.

What you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll be a key member of the leadership team, contributing to company strategy
  • Formulating both long and short-term plans, policies, programs and objectives for manufacturing, which encompasses cell production, ingredient and product manufacturing and onwards to product packaging and storage
  • Working with relevant teams to ensure alignment of product and process development with ‘design for manufacturing’ principles
  • Formulating and defining long-term objectives and performance standards for the Manufacturing and Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) teams, to ensure they achieve objectives and project completion within budget and time frame;
    • including identification, recommendation and implementation of changes to improve productivity and reduce cost and waste including using lean manufacturing principles
  • Ensuring that Manufacturing and MSAT are aligned so we meet (or exceed) customer requirements and expectations
  • Preparing and managing the annual budget for Manufacturing, including capital expenditure, operating costs and headcount
  • Working with the regulatory team at Higher Steaks, ensuring regulatory compliance across the entire manufacturing process, all of which requires a high degree of alignment with sustainability and reduced environmental impact goals
  • Keeping informed on current industry trends, ensuring that the company maintains and expands its technology leadership position

What we think you’ll need:

  • Experience of leading manufacturing in a bioprocessing or chemical processing organisation
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing processes in a new facility or experience in tech/process transfer into an existing site
  • Strong understanding of benefits and risks associated with subcontract and in-house manufacturing
  • Experience with manufacturing at CDMOs or strategic partners, either through having worked at a CDMO or having involvement in the management of outsourced projects.
  • Familiarity with compliance with the relevant statutory requirements and the enforcement of compliance company-wide
  • Experience of being audited by internal and external auditors; you will be experienced working with external regulators and customers e.g. during audits, inspections and product launch
  • BA/BSc in Life Sciences, Business, Finance, Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations or other related fields
  • Ideally professional certifications in Lean Six Sigma, Project Management or related areas

We’d love it if you also have:

  • Working knowledge of food industry standards (HACCP)
  • Bio-pharma industry experience
  • Previous global or multi-site remit
  • Previously led a scale-up, scale-out or step-change manufacturing project
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to identify and deliver transformational opportunities

Higher Steaks recruits, employs, trains, compensates and promotes regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, sex, disability, age, and other protected status as required by applicable law.
