Role and Responsibilities
KPMG International Services Ltd (KISL) seeks a full time VAT Management Accountant. The role is hybrid, with an expectation of 3 days in the office per fortnight in Canary Wharf, London, where most of the in-house tax team, who also have hybrid roles, are based. The role involves working closely with our Finance Team who sit in Toronto, Canada, and our third-party offshore Finance Provider, who is based in India.
Most of the work relates to European VAT, primarily UK and a smaller Netherlands registration. The successful candidate will also work on some matters related to HST (Canadian indirect tax) and US sales & use tax, although prior experience in these ancillary matters is not required.
The role reports to KPMGI’s Senior VAT Manager.
The successful candidate will:
- Have experience in using ERP systems to generate indirect tax returns
- Be able to work with Finance to ensure that the underlying systems and processes are generating good quality, accurate data required for the above returns.
- Be capable of building a strong relationship with Offshore Finance Providers to ensure timely and consistent coding of data.
- Enjoy taking responsibility for complex data analysis tasks - including using advanced excel functionality - that require a methodical approach, and working as part of a close-knit tax group that values collaboration and teamwork.
Responsibilities include:
- Preparation and submission of all VAT returns (primarily UK and a smaller Netherlands return, plus other smaller returns for other jurisdictions)
- Assistance as required with HST, sales and use tax etc returns
- Working with other KPMGI Teams to ensure that all aspects of KPMGI’s systems which relate, to the VAT returns, including gathering and analysing data from the underlying accounting systems, are efficient and accurate.
- Reconciling data across the general ledger and VAT control accounts, in conjunction with the Finance Team.
- Ensuring that the ERP system is able to accommodate new VAT registrations and VAT reporting requirements on a timely basis and managing advisors responsible for system improvements, to the extent they relate to VAT.
- Advising the business on day to day invoicing matters (purchases and sales), and other ad hoc matters.
- Assisting with the data aspects of any indirect tax audits.
Supporting the Offshore Finance Provider in their VAT related work.
Qualifications and Skills
The successful candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in a role with significant VAT management accounting responsibilities, including experience of reconciling VAT return data to the general ledger and checking the accuracy and completeness of data sets. This role is not suitable for someone who does not have experience of working in-house on VAT accounting related matters.
We would expect appropriate vocational qualifications. There could however be many routes to gain the experience required for this role and we therefore do not specify specific required educational achievements.
Significant on the job training will be provided, especially in relation to VAT technical matters (e.g. sales & use tax, and Canadian HST).
Experience and Background
The successful applicant will have:
- Competence in using ERP systems including extracting information from accounting systems, and reconciling data to the general ledger.
- A good understanding of UK indirect tax rules including invoice requirements, foreign exchange VAT accounting, place of supply rules and reverse charge VAT accounting. The successful applicant will be working with a team that has extensive VAT expertise and will provide support in their day to day work.
- A track record in building excellent relationships with offshore Finance Providers, and ensuring that they consistently provide high quality work within pre agreed deadlines.
- The ability to spot unusual issues outside the applicant’s knowledge and experience, and to refer these internally for further consideration.
- Strong team player skills but also be capable of working methodically and independently.
- Strong attention to detail
- An ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, and used to working cross border via email and telephone.
