Job description

UI/UX Designer

Competitive Salary – Depending on experience.

Are you a passionate UI/UX designer, motivated to build products and tools that make life easier for others? At Rocksteady, you'll be working with your colleagues across the business, through to the thousands of kids and parents who interact with our services every week.

We're the largest rock school in Europe, and we're looking for a UI/UX Designer to join our Digital Team, working mainly remotely. This is a chance to design products that will have a positive impact on the changing face of music education in the UK.

We might not look like a tech company, but this is a great place to work on digital products. Our in-house tech team bring their varied technical experience to a small, personal, collaborative team environment working on a great variety of internal facing and customer facing applications.

The Role

The role is to work as a UI/UX Designer as part of our Digital Team. The work will be split between developing and improving our existing business tools and designing brand new products (think apps and games) in the music education field. We have great product design experience in the team, but you will be the person fully focused on the art of visual design.

Ideal Skills and Experience

  • Proven work experience as a UI/UX Designer or similar role
  • Strong portfolio of design projects, demonstrating experience working within Brand Guidelines, to a brief
  • Experience working on interactive software (e.g., Apps or Games)
  • Motivated to build products and tools that make users' lives easier, and more fun
  • Most of our public facing work will be "mobile-first", responsive, and mostly for phone form factors, so being able to demonstrate work in that area would be essential
  • Fluency in Figma and Miro would be ideal. Experience using Xd or Sketch also considered.
  • Good time-management skills and an ability to work within team priorities
  • Happy to swap between multiple projects
  • Confidence to develop our UI design vision, while working within the existing Brand Guidelines
  • Enjoy user testing, and rapidly iterating designs, based on user / stakeholder feedback
  • Refining lo-fi wireframes into higher fidelity versions and finally, into product-ready, pixel-perfect versions, for developer handoff
  • Must be willing to work from our Liphook office once a week

Beneficial, but not essential:

  • Experience with educational products
  • Experience designing for kids
  • Having run experimental UX studies and analysing the results, to improve design usability
  • Working from concept sketches (made in PowerPoint, Miro or Figma, for example) and turning those into consistent, brand compliant, buildable designs
  • Animated prototyping experience (e.g., Figma, Miro, Framer, InVision), to create clickable models of proposed designs, for UX study and developer handoff
  • Skills with software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, for related print media or image editing projects / tasks
  • Experience cleanly handing off designs to front end developers. Typical handoffs include:
    • invisible layout parameters, such as edge constraints, centring, margins, padding, font weights, text line spacing and kerning
    • image assets
    • communicating the desired user interactions
    • micro animations
    • Managing shared library component design updates
  • Design for accessibility
  • An awareness of how design decisions can accurately translate into CSS and code
  • Having designed with any of the popular UI frameworks, such as iOS native components, Material Design, Bootstrap, Semantic UI, etc.
  • The ability to map user journeys against various personas would be a bonus
  • A passion for music education

Benefits

We ensure you work in an environment where staff are motivated and passionate about the work they are doing. We offer you the opportunity to grow and develop with the business.

  • A full-time salary position working daytimes during the week with 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Our office is a beautiful, converted manor house in rural Hampshire with vast grounds complete with its own lake, orchard and plenty of on-site parking
  • Fun – through annual staff away-day, Christmas party and opportunities to socialise with other like-minded and passionate individuals throughout the year
  • The chance to provide a quality experience to our customers all over the UK
  • Opportunities to work with the Rocksteady Foundation
  • Bonus scheme and company performance-based rewards
