Universal Underwriter
This role will be hybrid working and can be based in Sheffield, Leeds, Birmingham or Chester
We are looking for colleagues to join our Underwriting Department. Successful candidates will have excellent customer service skills as well as an enthusiasm and passion for doing the right thing for our customers whilst still balancing our Responsible Lending ethos.
The role is to assess the current financial circumstances of our customers who are applying for a lending facility and to provide well-reasoned credit lending decisions.
As part of the role you will provide credit assessments and recommendations whilst minimising the credit, fraud, regulatory and conduct risks. The role will also require you to provide constructive feedback to all advisors in our Distribution channels including the intermediary market. At all times you will treat our customers fairly, making this a driving factor in everything you do, whilst also managing and developing yourself to ensure that all standards, disciplines and internal controls are adhered to.
Role holders will carry out activities that will include the following:
- Assessing the current financial circumstances of our customers who are applying for a lending facility.
- Provide well-reasoned credit lending decisions.
- Use multiple types of lending which may include the need to understand nuances of different brands, systems and/or processes.
- Provide credit assessments and recommendations for a variety of new and existing lending requests whilst minimising any credit risks, fraud, regulatory and conduct risks.
- Have regular contact with customers and colleagues, on the telephones and in writing and must be able to communicate professionally in English.
- Resolve complaints and more complex underwriting scenarios.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Analyse, use initiative and judgement to provide well balanced lending decisions based on affordability
- Work with related business areas in order to provide guidance and feedback in respect of improving the customer service journey
- Ensure all procedures and internal controls are adhered to, minimising fraud, losses and bad debt. Continuously critically review policies and procedures providing evidence based recommendations for change.
- Identify opportunities to enhance working practices.
- Working as a joined up team with all UK brands
Requirements
The ideal candidate for this role will have the below experience and qualifications:
Essential:
- Previous experience of working in a Customer Service and/or Credit environment
- Minimum of English and Mathematics (GCSE A-C or equivalent)
Desirable:
- An awareness of credit risk/credit principles and procedures pertaining to the approval of secured and/or unsecured lending products.
- Understanding of regulatory environment and control including intent
- Previous Underwriting experience
You should have the flexibility to work within the hours of Monday to Friday 8am-6.30pm and Saturday 9am-5.30pm working 35 hours per week.
This is a hybrid role with an expectation to go into the office a minimum of once a month, this can be based out of Chester, Leeds, Sheffield or Birmingham. You can also opt to work in the office 100% of the time.
