Job Description

Location: London

Lots of things can influence the cost of insurance, including the type of cover being provided, the level of risk involved, the value of what’s being insured, and the client’s history of previous claims. Our Private Clients Insurance team tend to look after customers who have items to protect that would not be covered under a standard insurance policy, such as a big collection of supercars, or a rare jewellery collection. An underwriter takes all of these factors into account, determines what the likelihood is of something bad happening, whether it’s something we would be comfortable to insure and if so, how much we would charge the customer.

Join us as an Underwriting Assistant Apprentice and you'll be working alongside and learning from some of the most skilled underwriters in private client’s insurance. What’s more, you’ll be able to earn a salary whilst working towards qualifications. And our apprentice roles are permanent jobs from day one.

About the role

We don’t expect you to have had any previous underwriting experience – our structured programme will teach you everything you need to know! Right now, we are more interested in your passion, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

We will teach you how to work with our customers and brokers. As the first port of contact for our brokers, on the phone and via email, you will get to spend time building lasting relationships with them. You will also help to secure new business while ensuring our existing customers get the best solutions, tailored to their wants and needs.

Everything you do will have an impact on Aviva and our customers, so you’ll need to be passionate about delivering the best service and results. Prioritisation is key in this role; so you will likely be someone who enjoys planning as well as interacting with others.

The Apprenticeship

You’ll spend 80% of your time gaining real hands-on experience in the role and 20% dedicated to your Apprenticeship studies with a National Training Provider supporting your accredited qualifications; a Level 3 Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship. This typically takes 18 months on average to complete and you will also attain your Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate in Insurance (Cert CII).

Throughout, you’ll be working alongside a community of highly skilled and experienced professionals who will be on hand to support and encourage you every step of the way. This is a brilliant learning environment – a place where everyone is welcome to share ideas, ask questions and seek out advice.

What’s in it for you?

  • Starting salary of £23,800
  • Paid Apprenticeship study time
  • A permanent role right from the outset
  • Support towards relevant professional qualifications and lots of other development opportunities
  • Flexible working and wellbeing support
  • A great support network to help you grow into your role 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays
  • Opportunities to get involved and give back to our local communities with paid volunteering time
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Discounts on all Aviva products
  • A discretionary annual performance-related bonus
  • Share Save scheme

What do we look for?

New insights, perspectives and diversity of thought are all invaluable to us, which is why you don’t need to have had any previous experience. But we would like you to:

  • Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths
  • Be a great communicator, combined with initiative and a strong desire to learn
  • Possess the ability to work independently, but also as part of a team

Most importantly, you’ll need to be naturally curious, keen to take the lead when it comes to your own development and excited by the prospect of building a long-term career with Aviva.

Where will you be based?

This Level 3 Underwriting Assistant Apprentice roles available in our central London office. After your training and induction period, it is likely you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you and agree what works best for you, your team, and Aviva.

It’s important to note that even though we operate an office/home blend, you will need to live within commutable distance of the location listed above. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually and get access to the right support networks internally to help you to succeed.

About Us

We’re a leading international insurance, savings, retirement, and investment business. When the worst happens, we’re here to put the wrongs right. We’re proud to be different and just like our customers, our people are a mix of cultures, genders, and ages.

Like the sound of us? Then we like the sound of you.

Press 'apply' to be taken through to our online application, where you'll answer a short questionnaire about your motivations. You'll also be able to attach your CV. If you match our criteria, we’ll ask you to complete our Numerical Reasoning test. Pass that and next will be a telephone interview with our recruitment team. The final stage is a virtual assessment day, with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.

Impress us there and we'll offer you a role to start in September 2023.
