The Role
The PI team writes a book of USD 57m at a target ULR of 70.7%. We are looking for an Underwriter to join as a senior member of the team to underwrite International Professional Indemnity risks for syndicate 4444, as directed by the Head of Professional Indemnity to meet the requirements of the business plans and the strategic targets for premium income, profitability and return on capital as set out by the Board.
Responsibilities will include:
- To underwrite International Professional Indemnity business in accordance with the Syndicate Business Plan and within the terms of the underwriting authority.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with brokers and clients to establish Canopius as a preferred market for International Professional Indemnity business.
- Working alongside the PI team, identify and exploit new business opportunities for the development of schemes/products to be marketed through a variety of distribution channels and taking responsibility for delivery of these products.
- To research and develop new business opportunities for the syndicate.
- Ensure that there is a highly effective working relationship with other underwriting and support units within Canopius to maximize efficient use of internal company resource to support business activities.
- To ensure that the business written is controlled effectively taking appropriate corrective action on poorly performance business to meet SBF targets and ensure that business written complies with all relevant regulatory standards including those laid down by the PRA, FCA, and Lloyd‘s.
- To ensure that all business written complies with Canopius internal policies, procedures and controls and that these are understood and adhered to by the team.
- To ensure that business is only accepted through intermediaries and coverholders approved by Canopius in accordance with internal procedures
- To ensure that complete and accurate underwriting records are maintained.
- To promote a culture where client’s needs are placed at the heart of underwriting decision-making and business is conducted in a manner that meets Canopius internal standards and FCA guidelines.
- To actively assist with development of Junior Underwriting staff

Skills and experience:
- Significant experience in Professional Indemnity class of business
- Successful and profitable track record.
- Ability to make sound decisions based on data and risk analysis and ability to make a positive impact on the long-term success of the overall business in planning, organization and development.
- Product development
- Good communicator, both verbally and written.
- Good computer skills including MS office.
- Working knowledge of the Lloyd’s market.
