Job description
Undergraduate Intern - In search of bioactive molecules
Project title: In search of bioactive molecules: Uncovering the terpenoid diversity in the plant genus Achillea
The genus Achillea comprises c. 134 species including the medicinal plant yarrow (Achillea millefolium). However, there is a knowledge gap on the diversity of terpenoids (diterpenoids and triterpenoids) across the genus and whether the number of genomes present within a species (i.e. ploidy level) impacts the terpenoid profile. These gaps are impeding research on understanding the diversification of terpenoids within the genus and their medicinal potential.
This project aims to address these knowledge gaps by investigating terpenoid diversity across the genus Achillea. It takes advantage of Kew’s extensive collections (Herbarium, Living, Seed) to provide material for state-of-the-art chemical analysis, and expertise in understanding the impact of polyploidy and plant evolutionary relationships.
