Applications are invited for an experienced Trials Officer to join our highly regarded Crop Trials Team. The Crop Trials Service undertakes research that is intended to underpin the development of resilient and sustainable systems of crop production that are economically viable, but also environmentally and socially acceptable. The postholder work under the supervision of the Unit Manager and the Service Manager and will perform all necessary tasks to set up and perform a large range of trials, including:
- driving farm machinery (full training will be provided if necessary)
- machinery light maintenance
- marking out and set up trials on various crop including potatoes and cereals
- hand spraying, tractor spraying, hand and tractor fertilising
- performing basic assessment, fungus disease and weeds recognition
In order to be considered for this role, candidates should possess an HNC/HND in a science subject and have a basic knowledge of arable crops. In addition, a basic knowledge of the use and maintenance of farm machinery is desirable. A certificate of competence in the use of Pesticides (PA1, PA2 & PA6) would be desirable but is not compulsory as SRUC will arrange and fund the training if required. Similarly, an HGV licence is desirable and applicants willing to undergo the training would be funded and arranged by the SRUC. This role provides excellent opportunities for personal training and development.
Occasional evening and weekend work will be required at peak crop sowing and harvesting periods.
