AECOM have a number of exciting apprenticeship opportunities across the UK & Ireland within our Transport Planning Team. We cover all areas of transport planning, from pedestrian and highway modelling, to public transport and spatial planning. As an integrated team, we provide design and planning advice from inception through to detailed design, often working alongside engineers, architects and master planners in multi-disciplinary teams.
As a Transport Planning apprentice you would provide technical support to Transport Planners working on policies, projects and plans relating to all kinds of transport systems including roads and the use of cars, lorries and buses; rail networks; pedestrian systems for walking or cycling; and air travel.
Responsibilities will include:
- The planning and design of transport and traffic policies, plans, schemes and systems
- Collecting, preparing and presenting data, written information and analyses to inform the development of policies, plans and projects
- Modelling transport and traffic systems
- Assessing the impacts of possible transport measures
- The development and implementation of travel planning (Smart Travel) schemes
You will combine work-based on-the-job training and learning with further studies and must be willing to progress your career. After an initial probationary period you will undertake a day release or block release course at a Further Education College to study a level 3 in Transport Planning or a level 6 Transport Planning Degree Apprenticeship, and ultimately work towards achieving Engineering Technician status with the CIHT. AECOM will cover the travel, food and accommodation costs for the block release weeks. You will be allocated accommodation depending on your age. Under 18s will be staying in small groups in vetted homes. Over 18s may stay in local hotels. All activities and accommodation are covered by the colleges Safeguarding and Accommodation policies and procedures.

No experience is necessary but the position is ideally suited to school leavers at either GCSE or A-Level standard (or equivalent) who can demonstrate:
- Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade ‘C’ or above (or equivalent such as Scottish Standard Grade, or Junior Certificate in Ireland), including Mathematics & English
- Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software
- Demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career in Transportation Planning
- Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
- Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic
- Ability to demonstrate attention to detail
- Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects
- English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports
