As a sector-leading charity retailer, and following a review of our operational stock management, fulfilment, and distribution we are entering an exciting new core infrastructural change with the introduction of Regional Distribution Centres (RDCs) to our portfolio of shops and superstores.
Our RDCs will provide an opportunity for us to process, store and distribute stock across our network, while also providing an extension to our Marketplace and e-commerce activity.
Part of this change will include the introduction of a new centralised driver management team to provide specialist support for our drivers and deliver investment in new fleet management software.

These changes will ultimately drive forward our profitability as the sector-leading charity retailer and improve our contribution towards CRUK’s mission. The Transport Manager will be responsible for effective operational management of the national Retail Division and Superstore Drivers c. 52 headcount, including where required additional 3rd party van/driver requirements and pallet movement spend.
Managing a large geographically spread driver and van fleet, regional Driver Supervisors, and a Driver Routing Coordinator; the Transport Manager will ensure the cost-effective collection & distribution of stock throughout our retail portfolio of high street shops & superstores, warehouses, supporters, storage locations and corporate partners.
This role will work in collaboration with the retail, stock acquisition & RDC (Regional Distribution Centre) teams to fulfil stock requirements, understanding stock categories & propositions and associated sales value when moving stock between shop propositions utilising analysis of management information.
What will I be doing?
- Developing and manage the day-to-day efficiency of all van drivers and vans within the retail fleet; ensuring the vans are utilised to the optimum level whilst adhering to appropriate legal/regulatory and company requirements.
- Ensuring transport and driver records are kept to up to date to & monitor driver standards; taking appropriate action as required
- Working in close collaboration with the CRUK Fleet Manager
- Developing and delivering recommendations for a revised driver efficiency strategy inclusive of reviewing driver van requirements and associate equipment
- Managing a superstore driver expenditure budget of £430k and a £650k budget for core van drivers
- Managing a fleet of 52 vans and associated expenditure budget and running costs; ensuring delivery of stock movement more than £20m value
- Instrumental in developing the new transport team; design, training and planning the future driver recruitment strategy
- Developing strategy for new driver and fleet requirements in line with superstore growth strategy
- Playing a key role in supporting the delivery of the Trading Stock Development strategy for RDCs, ensuring driver teams are aligned and successfully linked to the RDC sites
- Developing and delivering future proof software strategy for drivers support, inclusive of stock management and telematics
- Liaising with suppliers, supporters, and drivers in a professional manner, building & maintaining excellent relationships
- Responsible person for Driver Agency and 3rd party driver contract ownership and management
- Supporting the retail teams, understand the stock requirements and deliver an excellent service to our shops & Superstores; working closely with the RDC managers to understand stock availability & ensure ‘right stock right place’
What skills are you looking for?
- A background within transport & logistics, preferably within a retail or a fast-paced commercial environment.
- Proven ability in managing & motivating a team of drivers & support team to produce excellent service to the retail network
- Excellent understanding of driver regulations and compliance regulations
- CPC qualification would be advantageous
- Experience of vehicle routing in a complex environment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal to a variety of audiences
- Highly organised, able to co-ordinate multiple deliverables, set and meet demanding deadlines, and to hold others accountable for delivery of activity.
- Ability to use Microsoft office excel to a high standard along with a compressive knowledge of other applications
- A full driving licence and flexibility to travel for meetings/training/site visits is essential
