Job summary

The post is within the Joint International Crime Centre (JICC). The JICC operates in a very dynamic environment at the forefront of international law enforcement co-operation using the established channels available. Currently these are INTERPOL, Europol and liaison officer networks.

Job description

For the Translation Team, the main body of work comes through the INTERPOL channel. (INTERPOL has 4 official languages – Arabic, English, French and Spanish). The small team is made up of officers with capability in at least French and Spanish. The aim of the team is to provide an accurate and timely translation service to operational teams. The subject matter is varied and covers the whole range of criminality from simple checks to reports on serious and complex cases. There is often involvement in cases which are of high media interest. A Degree in French and Spanish or equivalent professional qualification is essential (e.g. full membership of Chartered Institute of Linguists or Institute of Translating and Interpreting).

***All NCA officers must hold SC Enhanced upon entry as a minimum. To meet the National Security Vetting requirements for this role you will need to have resided in the UK for a minimum of 3 out of the past 5 years. For more information please see the Candidate information Pack***

Person specification

The vast majority of the work is the translation of incoming documents from French and Spanish in to English. However, there are occasions when there is a requirement to translate outbound messages into French or Spanish in order to facilitate the progress of an enquiry. Due to the dynamic environment and the nature of the work, the urgent intervention of the translation team is frequently sought. This means that there is a need for a speedy response whilst still maintaining the highest degree of accuracy and attention to detail. There are also occasions when the use of language skills will be vital to assist with an outbound or inbound enquiry by making or receiving telephone calls to or from international partners.

Please note: The JICC operates from 07.00 until 18.00 and your daily hours of duty will be within that range depending on the requirements of the business.

Qualifications

The following qualifications/skills are essential to the role and proof will be required at interview:

  • Degree in French and Spanish or equivalent professional qualification (e.g. full membership of Chartered Institute of Linguists or Institute of Translating and Interpreting)

Please ensure the dates of any accreditations you are relying on, are entered on to the CV.
Should you progress to the assessment stage of the process, you will be required to provide a copy of the original certificate.
Failure to provide evidence at interview may result in your application not progressing to the next stage.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Delivering at Pace
  • Managing a Quality Service

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills (as you may be required to field international phone calls from foreign law enforcement partners).

  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and work prioritisation

Benefits

Whatever your role, we take your career and development seriously, and want to enable you to build a really successful career with the Agency and wider Civil Service.

If you are an active police pension member immediately prior to joining the NCA, you can continue your membership throughout your employment with us as if you were a serving police officer.
