The training contract candidate will need the motivation and skill to be fully dedicated to achieve their qualification and to complete any necessary academic requirements to begin the training contract in September 2024. As a trainee, you will become a pivotal member of the team; supporting the Partners by bringing innovative ideas to the attention of your team.

Based in London, the trainee will build on their existing legal knowledge by gaining an understanding of the practical implications of the law. You will work with large businesses and overseas law firms. We work on high-profile deals and cases, and you will often help manage the smooth delivery of service to our clients across jurisdictions.

Duration

Over the course of the training it will take two years to qualify after completing four 'seats' in each of our various teams.

Main purpose of the role

After attaining the necessary academic qualifications, typically at Joelson the training will consist of four ‘seats’ of six months each in different departments. These may include:


  • Corporate/Commercial;
  • Litigation and Dispute Resolution;
  • Property including Construction; and
  • Employment/Immigration.

The Trainee Solicitor will also have the opportunity to develop and apply the skills required by the SRA (known as the Practice Skills Standards), namely:

  • Advocacy and oral presentation;
  • Case and transaction management;
  • Client care and practice support;
  • Communication Skills;
  • Dispute Resolution;
  • Drafting;
  • Interviewing and Advising;
  • Legal Research; and
  • Negotiation.

At the point of qualification, it is expected that the Trainee Solicitor will be able to demonstrate all the components of the SRA’s ‘Day One Outcomes’, namely: core knowledge and understanding of the law applied in England and Wales; intellectual, analytical and problem-solving skills; transactional and dispute resolution skills; legal, professional and client relationship knowledge and skills; personal development and work management skills; and professional values, behaviours, attitudes and ethics.

As well as the above, to become a successful Solicitor, they will also participate in a structured training programme to provide a comprehensive learnings for marketing, knowledge management, financial aspects of client work, e.g. reading client ledgers, recording time spent on files, capturing disbursements and billing procedures.

The culture at Joelson also relies upon the participation in the committees, social life and charitable activities of the firm; building strong internal relationships across departments.

The Trainee Solicitor will receive ongoing feedback on their performance, and will be supported by a system of regular performance appraisals to allow them to learn and develop.

The Trainee Solicitor will also be expected to attend and satisfactorily complete the PSC during the two-year training contract. The firm will pay the fees and provide any necessary time off for the first attempt at the PSC.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Strong academic qualifications;
  • Ideally some relevant legal or professional services work experience;
  • Good problem-solving and lateral thinking skills;
  • A natural interest in business and current affairs;
  • An outgoing, enthusiastic and confident manner;
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to write accurately, clearly and fluently;
  • Strong organisational and administration skills, with the ability to multi-task effectively;
  • The ability to work well as a member of a team;
  • Good commercial and financial awareness (ideally demonstrated by relevant work experience);
  • Attention to detail and good ‘completer/finisher’ skills;
  • The ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism;
  • A ‘can-do’, flexible attitude;
  • The ability to work effectively on his/her own initiative when required; and
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, and an ability to pick up new systems quickly.

Hours and location

9.30 am – 5.30 pm Monday to Friday, with the flexibility required outside those times on occasion.

We offer flexibility to work from the office or at home with a recommended 3 days in the office and 2 days remotely. There is 1 designated team day within the office per week and 1 firmwide day in the office per month.
